Opal Aztec (sorta long)

felissa Sep 16, 2003 03:44 PM

I'm going to the New Hampshire reptile expo this weekend to buy me a corn. I plan to get an opal aztec (I already told the vendor what I wanted before I even decided to go to the show. I was just going to buy it online, but why do that when I can drive for an hour and pick it up myself?). I decided I really liked the colour on the opals after searching for pictures of adults. I couldn't find very many that were bright, full-body pics of aztecs though. I was wondering if anybody had full-body photos of adult opal aztecs. ( these are wonderful photos, but they're kind of dark and covered)

I'm also planning on getting two corns. The opal is a definite. I was wondering if someone could recommend another morph to go with the opal for future breeding purposes. It's not _absolutely_ definite that I will be getting a second one. If I can't find a compatible morph I'll get it somewhere else, later. But I would like to have an idea.

Forgive me, but I have the worst time figuring out genetics. I've looked at charts and stuff for the various morphs, but it's honestly just greek to me. I figured I'd ask a group of people that seems to have resident breeders that know what they're doing.

I was thinking perhaps a lavender aztec or zig zag. The only thing is all the pictures of adult lavenders that I've seen just look muddy grey. Is it just impossible to capture their true colour on film? or are they just grey? (The hatchlings sure look purdy though)

I'm leaning towards something with more white than yellow. (Originally, before I decided on the opal, I was looking to get a blizzard. But most of the adults still have a slight yellow to them, which I just find unattractive.) I dunno, I'm just not big into yellow. Orange is fine though. I like cornsnakes with a lot of colour. Though I also like the blizzards and the anery b's with distinct patterns.

What do you think? (sorry this is so long)

I think lavender would be a good pairing for an opal, simply due to the fact that opals are lavender amel. This means that if you decided to pair them down the road, you would be able to produce lavenders (and it the lav was het amel, you could produce opals too!).

Beyond that, some lavenders appear duller than others. I have one lavender that has the lavender and pink coloration, and another that has more of a reddish grey coloration. I think it depends on their ancestors. I would suggest asking Rich Z. about what causes each variant of appearance, as he's the one who produced the first lavs, and has quite a bit of experience with them. To do so, you'll have to email him, or visit his message board. He doesn't read KS.com anymore.

I figured lavender because of what little I do understand about opal genetics. I'll be keeping an eye out for a lavender aztec het amel.

I'll definitely float around that forum and his site. I dunno that I should directly bug him about it, he seems really busy.

And I LOVE your sig! It cracked me up the first time I saw it, and it still does every time. My S.O. loves it too.

beautiful pictures

I'm getting my opal aztec from PMherp, but hey, if he's got a lavender aztec I'll buy that off him too if they're not siblings. I was just going by what he has on his "currently available" list.

I'm going, as is my s.o. and my mother (which is odd, but hey, she'll drive ). And I told a girl who works with me about it, so now she's going with her s.o. I am supporting my fellow New England herp-fanatics

thanks again!

I did ask if he had any lavs left, and they're all sold out. If I can't find one at the show that I like, I'll get one from him later. Thanks though!
