Can you say CRYSTALS?????

anthony james mc Sep 06, 2009 09:11 PM

Well they small clutch from Super Crystal x Mojave is at the point I had to peek (right at day 51 now). I am very pleased to say out of 3 eggs 2 are Crystals like I had kinda assumed based on how they candled after day 40! The other egg will automatically be a "Special" because the Super Crystal can't make a "normal" anyway . Needless to say I am very pleased that I got anything AT ALL out of an 08 male of this caliber already!
Hopefully the Crystals turn out as nice as Tom's Crystals have (the Mojave mom is my nicest looking Mojave so we'll see)and in a few days I will put up a couple of my low grade pics for someone to poke fun at, lol!

At the very least this is more proof there is nothing special about Tom's Mojaves , it's this other gene doing the work making them come out the way they do.

Anthony, can you explain what a "Super Crystal" is? I'm familar with the term "Super Special" which is a homozygous Special, but I wasn't aware that it was possible to make a "Super Crystal".

Originaly, Tom Baker named the Homozygous "special" a supercrystal; thinking it had mojave in it as well. That wasnt the case , as future breedings proved. So technically by Tom's naming, Anthony owns and is breeding a super Special and not a supercrystal.

Congrats on hitting the odds on that clutch. Hopefully they hold out for some of those other clutches we're all waiting to see the results on.

Is the crystal a result of a mojo x special? And what are the distinguishing features of a special?

I hear you Jason , fingers are still crossed as the time is getting closer, still a bit uneasy about just 4 eggs from het x het..

Yes the Crystal or Crystal Mojave is a combo of one copy of Special and one copy of Mojave , they seem to be alleles of each other making "Special" another member of the Lesser complex . Specials really are subtle like pretty looking normals in some ways, alot like people say a vanilla or a Vin Russo Het reminds them of a nice looking normal. The nice thing about having the male I have which is really better called a Super Special (as Clint correctly stated a few posts ago)is that he can't make a normal, if it looks like nothing crazy your really looking at the Special gene all on it's own as the sire is the homozygeous level of the Special gene . He was produced from a Pastel Crystal bred back to the founding "Special" female and looks nothing like a Mojave or Super Mojave and in theory should not have ANY connection to the Mojave gene because if the 2 genes (single Mojave and single Special) are alleles (which lets you make the Crystal Mojave which has yet to reproduce more Crystals when bred to non lesser complex members or normals) you can't have any mojave influence in the Super Special nor can you have the Special gene in a Super Mojave for that matter....

Anyway hope that makes at least little sense !!! It's a project that made me think alot and I liked that part about it enough to get into the project fairly heavily just to see what else it may be able to do in the future..
