wild caught vs. captive bred?

zippybomb Sep 07, 2009 04:59 PM

I was looking for a baby water monitor on some of the websites on kingsnake and I only found one website that was not sold out, but it's monitors were wild caught. I just wanted to know if wild caughts usually are unhealthy and if I should keep on looking for captive bred? also is true that they gas the bushes and trees to catch them? if so there is NO way i'm getting them. any help would be appreciated!

I can't speak on behalve of a WC water monitor, but I do have experiance purchasing captive bred and born from Jim at Reptile Guru.

They were phenominal examples of water monitors and had no health issues at all. It was definately more costly ($) to go that route, but I have no regrets, although no matter which route you go is going to be costly if you get a Water, hahaha.

Cheers,
Mike.

I just bought a Sumatran Water Monitor from Ben Siegels in S FL. He had a a whole clutch of them....Beautiful babies..bright yellow coloring..Nice clear eyes..for a $100....I've bought several animals from him in the past...his animals are top quality and very healthy...check the classifieds for his ad...hope this helps

"A whole clutch" implies a captive bred clutch. Captive bred Waters do not sell for $100.

The question is not "how to tell" but rather, "Is there anyone else besides Reptile Guru that has captive bred and born Water monitors?"

No, no one comes to mind. All the "$100" Waters on the classifieds are imports. I can't believe people still fall for the Water monitor okey doke...

When I purchased the Water Monitor I asked if it was captive bred and I was told yes. He had several of them. I've been buying reptiles from Ben Siegels for years and he's an honest straight up person. always bought top quality animals from his place. I'm new to the Water Monitor scene but not to herps. I visited your site and you guys have some nice animals but let me tell you that the ones I saw at Ben Siegels are just as nice...

I've bought several animals from them. nice folks and healthy animals.

They are albinos or hets, but cbb nonetheless.

Yes he has, but his are an Albino line, not "regular" Waters, so there is no chance of confusing them, at thousands of dollars each, for "captive bred" Waters at $100 : )

Yes, Kevin put in the effort for such large monitors to produce a valuable morph, with the price of imported young ones I dont think it would even pay for itself to breed normal ones unless you just have a very deep love for the species. I know the space I use for dwarf monitors is large enough for me.

actually owe you an apology..you were right the Water I purchased was an import. It was captive bred at a farm but imported to this country. never the less very nice and healthy babies. I guess I misunderstood when I asked. I was also looking at some Argus babies and those were the ones that were captive bred.

robyn@ProExotics Sep 11, 2009 12:45 PM

farmed Waters can be of extremely high quality, and also horrible quality. But they can be excellent. There is just a distinction between farmed animals and actual captive bred animals. Your misunderstanding is very common, happens all the time.
