puterfused, (Lisa and Rex) Please read..... your dragon is prolapsing

CheriS Sep 16, 2003 04:15 PM

for a reason, replacing it or stitching it will not correct the base problem causing it. Most often it is either parasites or gram negative bacteria.

They can prolaspe many times, but once you find what is causing it (its not usually a case of weak muscles or genetics) they can live healthy normal lives..... below is one that prolapsed at 5 months a few times, finally they got a smear high up to test when she was open in surgery and found a gram negative bacteria, treated it and she poured on weight and growth afterwards.

Cheri,

Thanks for your post and concern...we appreciate it!

Rex went back to the vet that evening & they put him back together. This time she didn't stitch him shut, just pushed it back. Said if it came out in the next 24-48 hrs bring him back??

He's on antibiotics 2xday for 10 days (baytril injectible) -- and speaking of meds...what's the easiest way to get liquid into him? When dealing with .1 ml doses, you miss a drop in his mouth & its a big part of the dose...any suggestions?

He's not eating & seems to be laying on his heat rock alot. He's alert & will look up, watch me, etc when i'm by his cage. I'm hoping it is just the stress of the ordeal that has him out of sorts. How long before I should get really worried about him not eating? I've tried all of his favorites, both veggies & worms, but so far nothing.

If he has other parasites the vet missed, will the batril be enough or do I need to go back again?

Any & all help welcomed and thank you everyone for your support
~lisa & Rex

I wrote baytril injectible in the last post as Rex's med because that is what the label says. BUT in reading other posts, seems there is oral & injectible. Anyhoo, just to clarify...i'm giving it to him orally in a medicine dropper.
sorry for any confusion there,

and is effective against many gram negative bacteria. Your vets sounds like he/she is on top of things, its recommended not to stitch a prolapse unless they do it twice in a 48 hours period.

If a reptile is prolapsing, and a reason can not be detected, assuming it is a bacteria is the route most take and I think the best way to go.

The dragon will probably not want to eat while on the baytril, but also think and talk to your vet about adding a probiotic while on the meds. The baytril will knock out other bacteria in the digestive tract that is beneficial to the dragon and that needs to be replaced for his normal digestion to kick back in.

Keep him hydrated, I have found that they all seem to love diluted strawberry-kiwi gatorade, just put some in a syringe (no needle) and lower the back side lip a bit (don't force) and place a drop there, they usually start licking and gladly drink the gatorade. Giving them sugar drink is not good on a regular basis, but when they are not eating or ill, it can be a life saver.
