Feeding hatchlings

Degumeat Sep 09, 2009 10:07 PM

Google failed me and I've looked several forums but can't find details. I have baby lesser hatched on 8-16-09. I was told to wait until after his first shed (which was 8-27-09)to offer him food. I've offered him live ASF pinkies or fuzzies about every other day since his shed and nothing. My question is how long can a hatchling refuse before I need to intervene?

I have 11 other balls and have been taking care of them for the last 7 years but this is my first hatchling. If anyone knows of any websites or forums with info please let me know.

Try a hopper mouse, their movement usually triggers a feeding response.

Try something bigger pinks and fuzzies aren't really all that interesting. Go for small adult mouse or rat pup. They can go for quite a while without eating that egg yolk can last them well over a month.

Good luck!

Since pinks and fuzzies aren't really a physical threat, try leaving one in the enclosure overnight. You may wake up to find that it isn't there anymore. Some snakes are shy when it comes to feeding, especially hatchlings. And you can definitely move up one size, try a hopper, they're more exciting anyway!

Live weaned mice.
I've never had luck with anything but these. After a couple meals, switch to the ASF fuzzies or whatever.
I've had no problems going from mice to rats with hatchlings.

don't mess with the hatchling for a week.......then offer LIVE food late at night with no lights.

you are offering to often and thus stressing the hatchling. they can go well over a month without eating so no worries there.
