I was reading some classified ads today and one said that his tortoise had a Troven chip inplant. I reserched Troven chips a little today and found a viriaty of diffrent stylessizes. Has anybody used this method of tracking your tortoises? I have i few cameras set to motion detectors but this to me seems like a much better solution if it does what i might think it does. I mean with a camea ok i caught you in the act...but who are you? It dosent take much to cover your face and off you are. It is my worst nightmare to come home or get up and find one of my tortoises gone. I tried to contact my vet today and he wasnt in but idk what he will say the people in the office were clueless but that dosent mean to much. Any input would make me sleep easyer.

Hello

I chip some of my animals (I only dare chip those above 6 inch SCL) As I have to do them myself . No vet know or dare to do it in my area . By the way I am from Malaysia .

I chip mine in one of the hind limb . So far so good.

My regular vet hasnt done this he refered me to another vet specializing in exotics only, so we will see what he says. Did you chip a tortoise? Does it seem to bother them? I contacted the vendor of this chip and would like to get some outside input. You never know whos intrest is really at hand when somebody is trying to sell you something. I have seen several styles of implanters how did you get to know where to implant? I know i might be asking a lot of questions but info on this is a bit scarce and dont want to do something that is going to harm one of these lil guys.

how effective would chipping be in the event of theft, though? unless the thief (or someone they sell the tort to) takes the tort to the vet, and the vet happens to scan it, would it make a difference?

I think and i am not to sure but i think you can track them. That is the big question i am trying to figure out. I am waiting to hear from a rep from the company. I think he will contact me monday. But yeah if the only benifit is taking a lost one in to id it then thats not going to be worth it. It might be just wishful thinking but i could get lucky.

Herd back from the manufacturer:,

Once the animal is microchipped and registered to the owner, that unique microchip number always traces back to the registered owner.

If the animal is physically located after the theft, and there is a dispute of ownership, the microchip and its registration settles the dispute.
If the animal is scanned by an animal shelter, a veterinarian, or a member of law enforcement, they call our 24 hour 800 number with the microchip number, and we give them the owner contact information. We also contact the owner directly.
The system is unlike "LoJack" for cars, since there is no remote satellite tracking. The animal must be scanned with a microchip scanner.

heh, too bad there's not a lojack ship for tortoises... not only for theft reasons but because they seem likely to escape/explore when given the opportunity! my indoor cat is chipped because there's a chance that a vet or animal control will scan him if he ever gets out and they pick him up, but i don't think that really applies to our reptilian friends unfortunately...
