Reptile Room Lighting

HappyHillbilly Sep 12, 2009 12:20 PM

Hi!
I'm going to install a drop-down ceiling (metal grid/ceiling tiles) in an 18ft x 18ft building that will be my main reptile house. I'll also be taking photos in the room. I'd like to get some feedback on what type of lighting I should go with.

First thought is to go with fluorescent lighting; however - I've not taken photos under fluorescent lighting so I don't know first-hand how much of an effect it will have. I know that it definitely affects the way things appear to the human eye versus under incandescent lighting. I'm very picky about my photos and don't want to have to do a lot editing to remove yellow tinting.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions on recessed incandescent lighting, or, support for fluorescent?

Thanks for your input!
HH

For everyday use I'd go with the recessed fluorescent light, for the savings. I'd also consider perhaps installing a few cannister light fixtures that are directional, so you can have high quality incandescent bulbs for picture taking. I have fluorescent light for my herp room and use a light shroud with GE reveal bulbs for photo taking, that way I get the savings while still being able to take more accurate photos.

I just use a point and shoot camera so the light source makes a big difference for me.

Thanks for your input, Randall. That's pretty much what I've been considering - a way to incorporate both. I've not thought about using directional; that's a plausible idea to me.

Having fluorescents & incandescents on separate switches would allow for some finagling during photos as well as energy conserving. Though I've got the space to do so, I don't want to build a separate room or section for photographing.

If I can return the help - Remember K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple, Stupid. Ha! Ha! (I'm not calling you "stupid," it's just an old phrase) I bought a fancy DSLR camera over a year ago and still haven't figured out how to do everything it's capable of.

Thanks!

Anyone else?
