Bad shed, Please Help

gigantor Sep 12, 2009 02:30 PM

Hello All,
My python had a bad shed, everything came off ok,except for the second half of only the belly part of the snake.
Its really stuck on there and it looks a little red and cheesey , on some of the shed that came off, and on the body of the snake.
Can someone please help, thanks Bob

Please tell what type of python you have and whatt your set up is and temps/humidity.

The shed cycle is a constant process and actually starts all over again once a shed is completed. Depending on the species proper humidity maintained will produce proper, one piece sheds. The cage should be humid with out being soaking wet.

In treating stuck sheds you can soak the snake in water and also try some of the commercial shed ease products. Place the snake in a vented, secure container with just enough water halfway up its side. After soaking you can also place the snake in a wet bag/pillow case and the motion of the snake crawling in the bag will help remove the skin. You may have to soak 24 hours or more with a bad stuck shed. What works well for me is to put the snake in a mixture of aspen shavings and water with a thick "soupy" mix. The friction of the aspen will naturally remove the stuck skin including eyecaps. It is best to avoid getting to this stage by maintaining proper humidity all along. Do not force/pull stuck skin off that does not come off easily. Hope this helps-Bill.

The above advice is great, but you mentioned that it is "red and cheesy". This is more complicated than your "stuck shed". Infection is likely. I would see a vet and re-evaluate your husbandry.

Good luck,
Ian
