Brumation

jocephus Sep 13, 2009 12:15 PM

Never done this before, could anyone tell me how you brumate your hogs? I understand the concept, I am looking for specifics such as the temperature you keep them at and how you attain the temperature. Do you put them in a refigerator? Air conditioned room? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

Joe,
I put mine in my basement storage room for three months. It stays between 55f & 65f from November through January down there.

Ours go in an outside walled closet for a month or a little more on the north side of the house.
We're in Florida and that is the longest we can get below 60. This year it was just the month of Feb. Just be careful of temps above 60 for too long, as the are burning calories and moving around too much.

My snakeroom is in the garage. It has a window to the outside, so I just open the window and set the thermostats at 45. I live in southeast Tx and the temps don't often get lower than that anyway. At the first of March, I close the window and raise the thermostats up to 90 and start feeding and breeding.

I live in the midatlantic region, and the temperature swings can be pretty dramatic. I don't think my basement gets cool enough, but maybe I could use my shed and add a space heater with the temp set low.

Thanks everyone for your answers.
