One In A Million Kennerlyi Find

Jon R Sep 14, 2009 08:39 PM

I was recently out with some buddy's herping in S.E. Arizona.

My main goal was to collect a male kennerlyi to pair up with a female we collected last year.

We got to our spot and the conditions were perfect. Within a couple minutes I found a nice pair of neonates. Then after a little searching, we found two more females.

Here are pics of the three little girls we found. They are very good looking from this locale. I love the color of the first one!!

You may be wondering why I didn't keep the male. That's why I was there in the first place, right??

Well, I always say "its my time to catch a morph" I have seen tons of snakes in the wild and they are always very typical. Like most everyone else, I dream of finding something different. But I just don't have that kind of luck. My luck was about to change this particular day!!!

As we were just about to call it a day, we decided to do a little more searching. The next snake I was just about to find would make this day go down as the all time best herping day of my life..

Here are a couple teaser pics. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Yes, it's a boy and he feeds like a champ.

Axanthic kennerlyi!!

Comparison shot with a wild type female from the same area.

Comparison shot with an albino.

Belly shot.

Patternless?? Please share.

krhodes Sep 15, 2009 09:46 AM

I hatched out a kennerlyi female(pictured below), that is f2 to the male in the link. I also have the f1 which was previously thought to be a recessive trait. When the f1 was crossed with a normal, one of the f2's was blonde, proving it a dominant trait rather than recessive. As these blondes start out they have somewhat of a pattern that begins to fade with age, much like the anaconda line of westerns. The darker blotches stay while the lighter ones fade completely.

I'm sure by the pics you can imagine what a silver version of this morph would look like.
I'm hoping too that you will be able to breed it to find out if the gene has variations like both strains of axanthic in the westerns. Some axan westerns are nice and some are really nice. Hopefully you can find that out for us as well.

Same blonde as this?

I would guess so since they are both Evan's line. I've been trying to find that morph for years; glad to see it's still around. Hopefully more will hatch out just like the one above.

That snake is the sire to my f1.

Awesome stuff!! I would love to see the snapper.. I do dream of a luecy. But due to all the legal BS that went along with the luecy westerns, I think it would be a nightmare rather than a dream. Unless of course it was a mexican hognose this time..

But for now, I will be content with the axanthic... Does anyone know of any others out there???

Rextiles Sep 14, 2009 10:19 PM

Congratulations on your find! That's indeed a beautiful axanthic specimen. I hope you have luck breeding him out.

It's interesting how nature has this way of producing such anomalies and what else might be lurking out there for someone to find.

All the best to you and your new axanthic kennerlyi.

This is a great story and a beautiful HNK specimen!

Just imagine, if I found that I would have to give away all of the babies I produced from it (Arizona law since I am a resident).

CONGRATS!!!!

I know the feeling. Somehow I think you'll find yourself taking the little guy out quite often looking at and examining in a bit of disbelief.

Also great thing for digital cameras as I'm quite sure you'd have been spending a small fortune with Kodak developing photos!
