Regurgitation question?

spyiii Sep 14, 2009 09:55 PM

I had one of my smaller gophers regurgitate a fuzzy. His last meal was a fuzzy and it went down fine but overall I think he needs pinkies for a little while longer.

I have not had a snake regurge ever, so whats the deal 2 weeks no food and then feed him a pinkie head or can I feed him a whole pink?

Spyiii,

I had the same issue a couple of weeks ago with a newly acquired SD gopher. It was borderline (feed him a large pink or a small fuzz). I chose the later and three days later, he regurged... I maintained a generous supply of water in his cage, waited several days (probably 4) fed him a small pink and after that he was fine. Followed up with pinks for a week or two and now he is back to fuzz, just shed, ate again and is starting to show some growth. I could have been more conservative but the snake was drinking normally and the meal was appropriately sized...

Snakes don't usually regurge just because a meal was too big. If they do it happens quickly, not 4 days later. I have fed some pretty big prey and I have never seen a regurge just from the size of the prey alone. However the bigger the prey the more perfect the environment has to be to get it digested. What are your hot side temps like?

I would wait two-ish days and feed a pinky. If he keeps it down it was probably just a fluke thing. If not, then you need to reassess what is going on.

Ahh the old regurge scenario
Provide some fresh drinking water and I'd leave alone for at least five days before offering a reg size pink.

Here's my take on regurge.......
I think the key is not to try push feed them in thier first 6-12 months of life, especially were larger feed items are concerned.

From past(bad)experiences I now only feed my hatch on pinks for the first 6-8 months, starting with one mouse pink and increasing the amount of pinks, but never the size.Usually around 8/9 months old I tend to increase the food size BUT will use rat pups before I try fuzzies. This way it allows the animal to hold down a larger food item before the sudden intro of furred food, i.e fuzzies/fluffs.I find once they've taken rat pups for a while the fuzzie/fluffs are no problems for them.

RGDS.........AL U.K.

The whole room is heated up. It has an A/C vent going into it. When its hot outside I just crack the window and that lets the overall tempatures in the room get to about 82-83F, during the noon time. The coolest its gets down to is 73-75F at night/earl morning.

I just noticed last night that my thermostat in the house was not kicking on wire loose quick fix, so I think the tempatures were a bit higher the last couple of days around 85F or more because no A/C running. I think the extra temps could have done it.

Thaks for the tips, most of the other snakes I have are in blue right now, I'm going to wait 5-7 days and try again with pinks. Thanks again.
