Especially females that are borderline and will not eat regularly!

Awe Jay -- you still battling with those things -- breed her anyway she'll start feeding good.

Can't even get her to breeding size until now. She's 1700 grams but skinny as far as I'm concerned. But then I do compare her to my mammoth 2500 gram females so that could be why. Maybe this year...

Hang in there Jay... you know as well as the rest of us, if you were to sell her now next season her new owner would send you an email and a picture of the 2.3 Piebalds they hatched out of a 6 egg clutch!

It'll all be worth it this time next year. Sure you could just buy a pair, but where's the fun in that?

..yes...lots of pieds in general suck bigtime....
my 2 poss hets that grew well and ate well and btoth proved to be hets did well...the pieds themselves suck moreso....
male eats just gerbils and female eats ASFR now...they both started on mice...then got stupid on me....
.....
.......the better the morph the worse they eat and act at times.....

She has produced 3 clutches since then. I paid 4k for her so I feel yor pain.

I made my own poss hets that same season with 3000 grm normal females that lay 10 eggs and most got to size in 18 months.

Even the pieds that are produced have grandmas feeding habits....

Start fresh and make some hets if you have a pied male but use those normal femmales that feed well every week and lay big clutches.....You will be surprised.

Good luck
Raul

Pieds have been very good to me. I guess if the odds go 50/50 your bad luck might be my good luck. I love my pieds.

jmartin104 Sep 17, 2009 06:49 PM

Yeah, yeah, always someone to rub it in I did have some good luck of sorts this past season. I bred a het pied male to a 50% PH pied and out of 8 eggs got 1.7 PH pieds. Out of the 7 females I believe the count was 5 with het markers. Just about all started feeding right away. I traded the whole clutch. Now I'm beginning to wonder LOL

Pieds have been GREAT for me also. I've found out, at least in my case, that IF YOU START ANY BABY BALL ON RAT PUPS THEY FEED BETTER THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFE AND GO OFF FEED MUCH LESS OFTEN THAN THOSE I'VE STARTED ON MICE. Of course with some I've had no choice BUT I try to get ALL my hatchlings to feed on rat pups. Yes, they can easily eat a small rat pup but usually will not eat pinkies but once the pinks begin to get hair that's the size and time to offer them....

I bought 2 females back when they were 2500 a piece. Finicky eaters...slow growers...finally up to size, then slug out and skip a year... By the time I gave up on them I was able to trade one of my pieds for a pastel het pied who is an awesome eater and has already sired my first pastel pied. Once I got that pied gene into those pain-in-the-@$$ pastels, it's been smooth sailing!!!

Paul, I've had the same situation with pastels. Seems like they're fine up to around 800 grams. Once they hit the magic mark, they just shut off. Even those that were feeding on frozen thawed rats only want live mice. My pastel het pieds seem to keep going. I got my first pastel pied this year from a 20 month old girl. Keep up the great work. I know we have similar ideas and goals.
