Problems shedding!!! need help!!

gimpy487 Sep 18, 2009 09:47 AM

Hey everyone!

Ive been surfing the web for a good hour almost and still can't find the answer I'm looking for. I have two beardies, both about a year old, male and female. My male is having shedding problems both on his tail and his one front foot. We have been giving him baths every two days or so for the past week, which has helped the tail but his foot still won't shed. His foot has been dull and a little swollen due to the stuck shed for almost a week and a bit, and I'm getting really concerned. All I can find on the net is "soak in baths and raise tank humidity". I'm wondering if theres anything I can add to the bath to help him shed??? I dont want him to lose a foot or anything :'(

Im going to be honest, I cant afford a rep vet. So please no vet lectures, Im working on seeking advice from knowledgable experts, and Im hoping some on here may throw some ideas out there.

For additional info, they are housed in a 60 gal, with proper heat. May have had less humidity than ideal, but we've since been monitoring it, and have increased humidity. They get a regular diet of crickets and greens daily. They eat the greens just as readily as the crickets. Previous to the shed problems, the beardies still received a monthly bath.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as he's a beautiful citrus boy and I'm sure his colors underneath are magnificant!!

Thanks

Are you sure that his foot is swollen, and if so could it possibly have been swollen before?I wouldn't over-do the baths...mist the cage regularly[ do so lightly ]Irregular sheds can be common in beardies. If the skin is not too tight on that area, hold it underwater rub lightly between thumb forefinger..if that doesn't work, spray cage lightly daily..I do this every few days for drinking anyway, spraying on their heads.

Can you post a picture? You could just mist the foot a couple times a day rather than baths. My gut says that the shed is just not ready yet and I'd be careful not to work on it too much if it's not ready to shed on it's own.

You can use a soft toothbrush to help encourage the shed to come off after he's soaked in water for five or ten minutes. It is also possible as mentioned that the skin isn't ready to shed. It can take a week or two after the skin turns opaque before it comes off.

A picture will be helpful to know for certain.

I don't think a bath a month is anywhere near enough. I do it at least three times a week, and never have shed problems. Doesn't get much dryer than Las Vegas.
