Getting skunked

varanid Sep 18, 2009 11:21 PM

I'm thinking it's time to hang up the tongs for the season; the last snake I saw was a DOR bull snake a week or two ago. Anyone else in Texas noticed a cessation of herp activity lately? I'm in Amarillo...I've been out to three parks in the last month and had 0 luck (did see some cool avians and mammals tho).

It's too early for the season to be over!

No its not over in Texas, I'm down here near Waco and things are really starting to move again, since we finally got some rain I've seen 6 broad banded copperheads, 3 diamondback rattlers, 2 of which I found in my back yard, a coral snake, tons of ribbons and checkered garters. Hope you get some luck too.

There were a few things moving out west, mostly lizards but I did see a Central Texas whipsnake and a Texas Patchnose out. We needed this rain, hatchlings should be swarming.

Amen to the hatchlings! I got that cool shot of the baby copperhead intergrade last year at this time of year.

I'm seeing a ton of baby atrox right now (8 in the past 6 days now), couple of baby t-rats and buddy called me on Saturday to pick up what Animal Control called a 'big rat snake'.

Buddy described it and said it was sitting there, curled up hissing like crazy... suspected it was a bull- not a rat. Had him send over a pic, and it was a big bull. I was BUMMED another of his neighbors called Animal Control...

Well, I've been sidelined a couple of weeks to a virus, but I've seen 3-4 new roadkills right here in the subdivision. May be because of all the rain we got after I pleaded for an end to the drough/heatwave. Be careful what you wish for! LOL
Anyway, herps are moving in my corner of Texas, now I need to get moving as well!

Actually as noted elsewhere, the rains & cooler temps have reinvigorated herps in my part of Texas.
Fine big E. Yellowbelly racer sighted & observed for 2 minutes earlier this day. This is not a snake that I've seen much of here, so it was most gratifying.
Not hanging up my boots by any means!
