passing undigested food

banjobert Sep 19, 2009 09:26 AM

one of my dad's bullsnakes is having some digestive problems and he ate a pinkiy and was able to keep it down and he passed it and the poo contained a chunk of undigested pinky, there was some brown stuff a little mucus and some white solids so what does this mean? also this bullsnake is not constricting when he is given live pinkies or any other food, so if he swallows the pinkies alive could it dammage his insides or at least irritate them? also the vet is out of the question. see the post i need help.

Move the cage away from the window. Drafts will lower temps. What are your temps? Also in a high traffic area with footsteps, the added vibrations are likely causing stress. Another reason to move the cage somewhere quiet and away from the windows.

If you are taking sticks/ logs from outdoors without sterlizing, reptalian paracites are a greater risk. Ticks, mites. Examine the snake to see if there are ticks. Mites are smaller and trickier to spot. They look like black "flecks." Check the water dish too for black flecks or small black spots.

Good luck.

My 5 yr old, 6 ft Norther Pine feeds on frozen thawed mice, rats, chicks and quail. There are a few occacions when once he catches the scent of prey, as soon as I lower his food in front of his hide box with my hemostats, he nails it! And swallows the prey whole. No constriction involved. Pituophis do not always contrict, then swallow. Sometimes, they just swallow. Haha.

Good to hear he kept a pink down. My above post was in regards to your original post below. It would help to know what the temps are on both the warm and cool side. ??

Might be worth weighing the snake and keeping track of its weight gain/loss using a (food) gram scale. If the snake is looking skinny, find an experienced herp keeper to help your dad assist-feed - NOT force-feed- the snake if your dad doesn't know how already.

Hard to determine with the vague description you gave about the stoot to note normalcy or not. Perhaps a photo, if possible of the stool in question.
