New Hatchling Tokay

Dakman Sep 16, 2003 11:01 PM

Finally got a pic of my first hatchling I let hatch out with the adults. I think theres two but they are very elusive. Took 2 days and about 30 pics to actually get one you can see it well. They like to hide between the adults and around the egg cluster.

Am i right in thinking that the parents or at least one of the parents protect and look after the eggs and young?
Also, how big are newly hatched tokays?

I have 2 females and a male(adults) and they all look after the eggs and hatchlings. This pic is of one hatched earlier at one day old on my finger to judge size.

Hey, your hatchlings look tiny (or you have BIG fingers
).
How big are they, how big are the adults?
Obviously Tokays do differ a lot depending on the location where they come from.
I have two breeding groups originating from different imports 1, respectively 2 generations ago.
One group produces relatively small eggs and the babies are 3" maximum size, quite dark and look relatively similar to yours.
The other group produces significantly bigger eggs and all hatchlings are between 4 and 5" and much brighter coloured (pic) than those of group one.
Also only the animals of group two can store fat along their body sides. Even though they get same amounts of same food, flanks of group one are always smooth without visible fat deposits, whereas group two consists of fat and bulky individuals.
I think there are more subspecies to define in tokays than just G.g. gecko and G.g. azhari.
Maybe even morespecies. I have an almost black imported female which does niot produce fertile eggs with any male I gave her.
Fascinating

All my babies have been smaller than 3 inches Snout to end of tail. My fingers arent that big!! All my adults are real close to 12 inches now and still growing. One female is very light colored which changes alot and the other is a little darker with much more dep red spots on her. heres a pic taken the other day, shes a little scrunched and closr to 12 inches when not in that position, shes also very gravid.

the tokay is very nice, but I'm more interested in the alocasia leaf in the picture, is that an amazonica?
Thanks

To my knowledge this in fact is Alocasia amazonica

Thanks for the pic, i didn't realise they would be that tiny! Do adult tokays, no matter what sex, have a territory? And if so do they defend it from all other tokays aswell as other animals? If this is so, which i thought/think it is, they must make an exception during the breeding season, do they? If they all look after the same eggs and juveniles. Are there never any cases where the adults eat some of the juveniles?

Do they lay their eggs on things? Don't you have to incubate them? that is sooo cool!!!!
