Honest ???'s about Womas....

BrandonSander Sep 21, 2009 04:10 PM

Okay, before I begin, please note that I am honestly asking this question... not flaming or looking for a fight at all, I simply really want to know.

For those of you who keep/breed Woma Pythons - what is so special about them? Why do you keep them? What sets them apart for you?

To me they all look pretty much the same and I really don't know anything about their habits and behaviors so I'm curious why there seems to be an almost "cult" following surrounding them. It seems that those that have them are very fond of the species.

Please, clue me in. (Again, I'm not looking for a fight or argument, all of your opinions and positions will be respected. I know everyone has their own reasons so please fill me in on both your personal reasons as well as the "major reasons" MOST people that keep them seem to enjoy them so much).

Thanks!

I don't think it's the sort of question you can get an answer to. I'm with you in that womas sort of leave me cold--but then again, house snakes leave a *lot* of people cold and I love the little buggers--they're like a retic (which I also like and have) but 1/100th the size. Sometimes a snake or lizard just hits all your right buttons and you love 'em.

Okay, that was a fair enough answer, but with the number of people that seem to just love Womas there HAS to be something I'm not seeing.

I'm actually curious because I'm always on the lookout for a new species to diversify my collection with and I've been looking at Womas a lot lately. I know that those people who own them seem very pleased with them, but no one ever seems to say what it is about them that makes them rank so high.

Some of the bigger pythons are simply because of size and the shock factor, ball pythons seem to have their morphs, boas have morphs and size, other snakes have "personality". I'm just looking for the traits that Woma lovers see in their animals that sets them apart.

Well, other than high contrast or patternless morphs...yeah, there aren't many. BUT, Womas are intelligent, REALLY aggressive feeders and mostly tame. They are extremely hardy and easy to breed. 15 years ago there weren't many around but now anyone can afford them. I've got offspring that may breed in two years and the little ones are really cute.

I like'em

Well I have both womas and black heads and both snakes have a more intellegent feel to them. The womas must been seen in person and held to be appreciated. I really like their skin and scalation as well as the pattern on them. When you hold them or have them in a nice cage their pattern just looks like a mirage on the horizon. When I see them at shows for some reason I am sort of with you in the "not grabbing me" thing. But when I come home I am holding them or my black heads more than any others. I have some baby black heads that I hatched out that I can't figure out which ones to let go of and sell but again at the shows in the delis I am not really tempted. It is a very weird thing for sure.

I would say go hold a woma and check it out in person for your self and either you will get it or you won't. Oh and the "eye brows" are freaking adorable!!!

I appreciate the answers - I guess I'll just have to check them out in person and see if they grab me or not. Just looking at pictures and reading about them, the Womas don't seem to do it for me as much as the Blackheads - if I do go this route, I think I'm leaning towards them more. Something about looking like they dipped their heads in fresh ink that sets them apart.

Just as I talk about them being tame, one of my 07' males has an attiude change. Used to be tame, now he huffs and bites There does seem to be the occasional misfit in all species.

Decided to put my 07 high contrast male in with his mother, also high contrast. Her tail started twitching (you can hear it across the room), then about 5 mins later his started scratching on the paper, too. Then he started courting her.

Both of them are pervs, lol.

I've been keeping and breeding these guys for a few years now, and must say that intelligence and demeanor is definitely a factor. These snakes are very cool in their behavior, feeding, and individuality. With my experience, I've noticed that each one is distinct in its behavior and the way in which it interacts with its keeper.

As far as looks....eyebrows, man, eyebrows! Especially on young ones with very high contrast, they are a quality that cannot be overlooked. Just really cute! Also, there are some of us that are breeding for specific traits. Currently I'm working on getting the most high contrast babies possible with one female, and the brightest most orange babies with another.

Keep in mind, you probably won't fall in love with them at a show, unless the vendor really knows his babies and will take them out to show you some of their charm. I encourage you to either take the plunge yourself, or find someone nearby that will allow you to come over and interact with them to get the full experience.

I know this is an older thread, but I still wanted to pipe in. I love my woma too, after researching the little available info I was intrigued, once the price dropped I was on it! And I dunno how to word my attraction to them but everyday this seems to be the first thing I reach for when I get home, well maybe my girlfriend first, but she was wild caught and unpredictable! LOL but my woma quickly became my fav! ( ps my girlfriend doesn't read these forums...I hope!)
