Stinky fruit fly culture question...

Mothi Sep 16, 2003 11:32 PM

I just noticed today that 2 of my cultures that I made about 3 weeks ago have a ... stranger than usual smell. It stopped smelling like fermenting fruit and more like poopy smell...hehe

Do you use up the fruitflies from those cultures or soak the whole thing with adult flies and larvas? (I am reusing the containers.) Those two poopy cultures are still producing larvas and fruit flies.

Another culuture that I made a few days after those two poopy ones smells less fermented fruity than usual. I am guessing they are just going bad.

I also have 2 more cultures going that are 1.5-2 weeks old and just made another one tonight that I am going to transfer adult fruit flies into. It is okay to use the adult fruit flies from poopy smelling container?

Sad thing is, I only have 2 mantellas and a betta to eat all these fruit flies. I get so many more fruit flies than I can feed off, it makes me wonder what I need to buy to feed them to...hehehe

I'm not sure about the smell, as I mine only smell bad after about 3-4 weeks. At that point I soak them in the sink in very hot water to kill off any missed flies, and then I spray them out and run them through the dish washer.

I guess it might depend on what type of medium you use.

i would get rid of them. that happened to me a couple of times a
while back and i decided to keep them. that was a huge mistake
the smell became so unbairable that i had to get rid of them
anyway.i would say it would be easier on the people you live
with and yourselfto just buy a couple of new ones and set some
cultures up. i am probebly making it sound much worss then
what it was but believe me the smell only gets worse.
hope this helps
sorry for taking it out of preportion
