Got These Guys Today!

orchidspider Sep 23, 2009 12:16 PM

Finally got my pair of Black Eastern Kings (L.g.nigra) from Mark Hardie. He had plenty of females but only one male, that promptly got out and took a tour around my condo after discovering that the lid on his container was not completely shut, while I worried. I found him 45 min later and an hour after that he ate his first frozen thawed pinky. They were born 7/15/09 and are from Todd County, KY. The parents were found in a garage of all places. Thanks for helping me find a pair, you all helped me find a great pair of Speckleds, and I enjoy reading this forum a lot. The pics below are of the male, since the female looks the same.

Very cool!,...and YES!, Todd County is getting towards the very center of definite nigra territory, so there is no question there as to what it is,... all nigra!

very nice indeed!

Nice! I have an '08 pair of Mark'S Todd County's.
They originaly came from Brad Bauserman. They will
quickly lose the pattern and turn into nice "Black" Kings!
Mark has some great stuff! Enjoy!

Glad you like them and glad I could steer you to Mark. He is a great guy and has some very nice locale stuff. Some jack a-- ripped off some of his snakes this past weekend at a show he had a table at. Wish I knew who did that!! I might be buying a pair of those black kings from him soon. They are super nice!!

Yup, very easy to talk to on the phone, and sorry to hear about him getting ripped off. Thanks for your help Joe!

Very nice animals. I love nigra. The ones that are almost solid black are my favorite.
You have an excellent collection of locality animals. I have an 08 Montgomery co. NC. black rat that I got from Unwarrie reptiles. He's close to three feet and turning a nice, solid black in color. Steve

Thanks you all, Mark sent me a few pics of the parents and thought you might enjoy looking at them. These are not measly animals we are talking about for sure and Mark has some nice stock!

I collected the parents of the female Black Rat personally and when I put them in a tank, they bred instantly- it was the opening day of the three week camp where I was helping out at Camp Mondamin's nature lab and the visiting camper parents were defiantly amused- in a good way, to the kids I simply said the snakes were getting married. I released the father, and after the eggs were laid, I took the mother back up to camp and released her. I had kept a male as well, but wanted to avoid breeding brother and sister if I could help it, so one of the nature staff caught me a late 08 hatch male and I was able to give my own male to a local nature center for education. The wild male has only eaten once for me on dead, and refused live 2x, but then again, he could be feeling Fall coming on and thinking he better slow down.
