thanks aubrey seems like rodent pro or mice direct will be my two options i will have to think about

RodentPRO all the way. I have tried atleast two other sources and they haven't compared to RodentPRO. Just my two cents though.

That really depends on what you are ordering and what they have stocked up. In a perfect scenario if you place an order on a Monday morning, and they have everything in stock you can be looking at getting your shipment by the Thursday. But like I said, it can be highly variable.

The minimum you can order is one bag of a certain item, such as rats or mice, at least for the smaller feeder items. If you go to RodentPro's website and browse their product, it will tell you exactly how much is in a bag and the price. The shipping, at least for me where i live, has been around 40-45 dollars, which includes the dry ice to keep your order frozen, and the insurance.I highly recommend RodentPro, i've been ordering from them for over a year now, and i am always satisfied with their product=)

saagbay Sep 24, 2009 07:52 PM

so how many bags do you get at a time

i just check and found a bag of xxxl rats (2) and a bag of large rats (5) giving me a total of like $8 but then $47 to ship!!??!?!! is that right... that means my 7 rats a about a buck each just jump up to almost like 8 bucks a piece

at that where did the savings go... thats why i was wondering if this was only for bulk orders

Stephen,
....Shipping costs are calculated using a full box. If you order less than a full box it still costs a lot to ship the box. Ordering less than a full box is not cost effective. 50 large rats will fill one of their shipping boxes. 50 large rats will also just about fill the freezer section on most refrigerators and totally piss off your SO or roommates. If you have very many snakes raising your own rodents and having a large rodent freezer to use when you have to order more than you can produce or to freeze your own rodents when you produce more than your snakes are ready to eat is a good idea.
Jeff

Jeff Clark Sep 24, 2009 08:18 PM

Stephen,
...I just checked out your list of snakes in your signature. It seems to me that with what you have buying rodents locally and not raising your own rodents is the $mart way to go.
Jeff

well i was thinking that i wanted to try to buy a bag or two at first, maybe like two feedings worth of rats, just to test out the ordering, thawing frozen rats, and to see if they all will even take F/T.

that is the reason i want to even make a small order to begin with. but after looking at it again 50 lg rats if i had the freezer space would last a good 5 months and that would cost less than half what i pay (per month) right now.

now i would have to get a freezer just for that but i think i can fine something on like craigslist for that. also that is just lg rats i guess if need be i could feed Dixie 2 or 3 per feeding if needed, but at that they tell you waht fits in a box so mixing and matching wouldnt be to hard.

what do you think now that i look at it that way well then maybe its worth trying. i could allwasy get frozen at the petstore i got to to try out frozen before to make sure my snakes will even take frozen, before i end up with a new freezer full of rats that nothing will eat... lol i know im not interested in rat burgers buy hey ya gatta do what ya gatta do right lol jk

Hey Stephen,

I do agree with you that it costs a significant amount for shipping but I think it can still be very cost effective. For my five snakes I will order a full box which on average will last me 8-10 months (this is obviously depending if you have the freezer space available for that many rodents) but when looking at my last order I spent $1.05 per rat for 60 medium & small rats and $.38 per mouse for 75 xl adult and weanling sized mice. When compared to the $4 per rat that the local pet shops would charge or the $2 per mouse, you can start to see how this ends up to be some significant savings. Anyway, sorry to ramble

no thats good thats what im looking for

you are feeding 5 snakes i got 5 snakes too i was just looking at what jeff said about 50 lg in a box i (right now because they are on sale) could order that for $100 (also assuming i get some type of freezer for them) im pretty sure i could make that last at least 5 months now we are talking feed five snakes twice a month for $20 in stead of currently close to $50 a month....

looking at it that way shoot maybe it is worth it i could get a freezer off craigslist for fifty bucks im thinking i might try it

There you go, you might as well give it a try. I also have found that rodentpro has much better rodents than I can find locally, which I'm sure is good for the snakes.

ok well here is my order that im looking into placing for my animals, do to limited freezer space and for promt use of rodents i only order usually about 2 months supply of rats or so.

14 large rats (5 per bag )
46 medium rats (10 per bag)
16 small rats (20-25 per bag)
24 weaned rats (20-25 per bag)
32 rat pups (25-50 per bag)
24 fuzzy mice (50-100 per bag)

thats what i need to fill my order for 2 months tho the actual numbers change slightly either little more or less pending how many per bag the supplier has it set at. i also added in average per bag that is usual that i have seen

so ordering online is deff cheaper for me then going to the petshop and getting live/frozen feeders from them even with the $40-$60 shipping charge

rainbowsrus Sep 24, 2009 10:22 PM

LOL, just polaced an order myself. For me with my own =rodent factory it's really to supplement my added need for Hopper mice for all my baby snakes..... They have a sale on Hoppers so, 2100 hopper mice later That's enough to fill two fedex boxes or one greyhound box.

Whatever you do, to get the best overall price you need to tweak your order quantities to fill however many boxes of rodents you are ordering. One really nice feature of the RP site is they tell you right off how full your box(s) is/are.

wow 2,100 mice seems like a ton but i guess when it comes down to being small ones it really isnt that many lol could you just imagine 2,100 large rats OMG lol

on a side note: any updates on savanah huh huh huh :D

Jeff Clark Sep 24, 2009 07:56 PM

I order from RodentPro fairly often. I just got an order of 100 large rats today. They filled two shipping boxes. They were on sale and the shipping was actually more than the price of the rats. They provide good product and good service. I think they only ship on tuesdays so you will get your order on thursday in many locations. If you have very many snakes raising your own rodents and supplementing with orders from suppliers like RodentPro works well.

TimS Sep 24, 2009 08:12 PM

does rodent pro come in vacume sealed bags or just good ol freezer ziplock bags??

Jeff Clark Sep 24, 2009 08:15 PM

Tim,
...Freezer ziplock bags. Probably should be fed to snakes within 90 days of when you get them. If supplier is having an overstock sale they may not be as fresh and so should probably be fed to snakes sooner.
Jeff

TimS Sep 24, 2009 08:41 PM

thanks jeff. i only order on a two month basis this time of year anywhos. summer months i may get 3-4 months but i make sure everythign is vacume sealed nice and good
