Unwanted snake

varanid Sep 23, 2009 05:13 PM

My boss's boss's sister's kid got a little snake a while ago; all she could tell me was it was some sort of king snake according to the pet store that sold it. I think he'd had it like 6 months or so?
Anyway she ask me yesterday if I'd take it. Apparently her sister was complaining to her about the kid not caring for it and she promised to ask me, and I'm a sucker.
She had the kid bring it by the office today with it's cage. He'd been keeping it in an unheated critter keeper. There's stuck shed right and left, the little dude is spooked as hell and looks horrible. The kid said he hadn't eating since late July. The things stick thin and spooked. He's soaking right now, and I plan to pop in a pinkie tomorrow. I figure I'll start with a tiny one. He's still in the critter keeper but the rooms in the high 70s right now so it'll be OK for a bit. The putzer didn't have a hide dish and didn't keep water available. I have hatchling racks on the way and this guy's still small enough to use them.

I think it's a flordia or brooks but the pattern and colors are so obscured by the old sheds I'm not 100% sure. It may also be something else or an intergrade, don't know. It's so bad the poor guy looks like he's been covered in saran wrap or something. I'm hoping I can repair the damage. I'm pretty pissed atm. The kid was plenty old enough to know better like maybe 12 or 13? And the mom didn't do anything until the guy was half dead from dehydration.

Sometimes I freaking hate people.

what makes this more messed up is I'm actually helping another kids folks get her a snake for Christmas. I lent them my copy of the cornsnake manual and I've helped them pick out cages and stuff, and I'm ordering the corn for them later this year (her birthday is in December). I've had their daughter over a couple of times; she's about the same age as this idiot and she's more than able to care for a king or corn or anything similar. She's played with my boa and my calmer retic, she and I have talked husbandry...why couldn't that idiot kid have been more like her?

>> "why couldn't that idiot kid have been more like her?"

Well,....because that other kid is an idiot!, simple as that, I guess.

Please do everyone(including mainly the snake) a favor, and keep tabs on how things are going for a while, hopefully the "novelty" of owning a snake won't get like that last idiot kid....know what I mean?

hope things go much better now

I hate a good percentage of the general public too, many of them are as stupid as ROCKS!!

Why the heck didn't the dumb parents(or kid) give it away much SOONER if they were going to run a snake "concentration camp"???

This really irks me as well!

I'm glad you have it now, and good luck with getting it back up to health!

I think most of us that have done this a while have taken in at least one unwanted pet...*sigh* Always frustrating. And always makes you want to smack someone.

I just took him out of the soak for the last time...I've had him in a bag with a wet towel most of the last couple of hours, just changing out the water to make sure it stays tepid rather than cold. Some of the crap's come off but I'm kinda worried about the tip of his tail and his eyes. I guess rinse and repeat, and hope he enters a shed cycle soon to slough off the rest. Of course that'll probably be stressful enough to put off feed so I may skip the next few days to try to get a pink down him and soak him again next week.

I'm 85% sure I can get him healthy again; it looks like basic neglect, just dehydration and hunger. He'll probably be stunted a bit due to the rough start though, and he may lose the tip of his tail cause it had tons of old shed built up around it.

2 surprises: s/he still has energy to try to get away when I picked him up, and it's not a california king which was what I'd assumed it would be.

DMong Sep 23, 2009 07:34 PM

If after you have done this a while, and the eye caps, and tail tip still haven't come off, dry the snake off real good and put a dab of mineral oil(baby oil) on the eyes caps with a Q-tip or the tip of your finger. This will soak in and loosen much better than water many times. Do this over night, then by tomorrow you should have no problem at all removing what's left.

As you already know, it is crucial that these all come off.

good luck, man!

give me some time to get his shed off. I actually wound up offering a pinky tonight and he scarfed it down. It was a newborn from today or last night, so about as small as I can get them (I should have started raising some of my own years ago)...I usually wouldn't but I'm wanting to both get him some calories and nutrition, and get another shed cycle going, so I gotta get him growing for that.

I went over him a bit before feeding with a warm, wet hand towel and got more of it off, but there's still stuck shed on the left side of his head, on the tip of his tail, and one stretch about 1/3 the way down his back to around where the vent is. It's just one long strip on the dorsal side.

I'm going to try the oil trick Saturday night I think, after he's had some time to digest the mouse, and feed him again Sunday if this one stays down all right, and should have photos up probably by next week. I'll be getting some speckleds in from Tom next week (note to self--email to set up shipping!), and I'll try to get all the photos done at one go.

and i totally dont agree with it, but its this exact scenario that allows all of us to continue to make money selling to pet shops in order to cover our food bills and what not. as well as letting big breeders to continue selling of lots and lots of babies.

I think there's something to this too... over production is common in this hobby. Not only does it lower pricing... it overwhelms breeders and they give no thought to where these babies end up. As long as they're out the door, mission accomplished...not cool

This may be a touchy subject, but if you had to estimate, what percentage of baby snakes that are sold actually live for one year? Particularly with relatively inexpensive snakes (corns, kings, etc.) The breeders who post pix here really develop some beautiful animals, but I suspect lots of the babies they sell never live beyond one year.

KevinM Sep 24, 2009 01:11 PM

I am sure MANY first time small pets never live to their full life expectancy. Lack of respect by the buyer happens and is a way of life with all products, not just snakes. How many people you know of that ALWAYS get a new car every so many years because they dog theirs out and never keep them clean or serviced? What makes you think folks like that have any consideration for a $20 novelty pet. HOWEVER, I feel the parents need to be the adult in the situation and realize this is a living, feeling animal. Not the latest video game that can just sit on the shelf til the kid is re-interested in it again.

DMong Sep 24, 2009 02:28 PM

Very sadly, I couldn't have put it any better than that.

Many people just don't think straight regarding MANY things.

As funny as this might sound to some, I actually care a great deal about my snakes, and about where they go, although this is quite impossible to have much control over sometimes. I try to give a buyer all the important care and husbandry tips possible before they are sold, and even try to include that a good inexpensive book would be a good idea as well, so they can refer to it whenever they want, instead of waiting til problems arise that could have easily been avoided in the first place if they had only done some very basic research.

But as we all know, some folks will "act" like they understand all this, and the info will go in one ear, and out the other, then go home and allow the animal to be neglected, especially later on when the "novelty" of having a snake has worn off. This is a very sad fact of everyday life. This is especially true of the much cheaper and affordable common "pet" type snakes in the hobby.

I just wish this wasn't so, but unfortunately....it is.

off topic--what is that in the photo? I've never seen a snake that looked like that before.

It's an "extreme" hypomelanistic Honduran Milksnake I produced.

That's sad, sounds like you took it in the nick of time...

Unfortunatly, its not just the idiot kids fault, the parents are to blame also, mainly for raising an irresponsible idiot kid, and also for not making sure the animal is being taken care of properly...

I ended up having to sell my first horse because of issues with him not being taken care of were I was boarding him, the kids were supposed to feed him and the parents didn't make sure, and it almost cost him his health, fortunatly, he is in a good home now... People just piss me off...

Looks like you are the proud owner of a nice floridana!

Those dorks weren't even interested enough in it to even bother learning what KIND it was, much less take decent care of it!...geesh!
