Overweight Dragon....

beardie4u Sep 26, 2009 01:27 AM

I just had a beardie given to me (I have several) that is very obese. Anyone know how put a dragon on a diet? I plan to get a weight tomorrow and well as length. Seems to really bother him to walk much or touch one of his rear legs. it looks very uncomfortable so want to do what I can. Any advice greatly appreciated.

You can do just what is recommended for humans...cut food way down get him some exercise.Do not feed any pinkies or few if any superworms, hornworms.Feed reduced amount of crickets but be sure to add calcium powder twice weekly and vitamin powder once weekly.Give LOTS of greens [collard, turnip, mustard, grated carrot, veggies have very few calories but tons of fiber to move the bowels]]If he is fussy and prefers super or horn worms then give only a few every few days.To get him to exercise[the hard part] put him in a lukewarm bath about up to his shoulders b/c he will probably try to get out will get some exercise in the process, splashing around.Be sure to stay with him so no chance of drowning. Also,if weather is warm, put take him out let him walk the yard[if he starts to run, your exercise program will be off to a good start]

I would consider if there is something else going on besides weight that would cause problems with his legs.

Yes,the problem with the leg would warrant an X-ray...do you have a herp vet?

a picture of the dragon will be helpful as well as learning the length and weight.

For diet, I recommend offering about half a cup of mixed healthy greens, every other day with 3-6 adult crickets, superworms or silkworms dusted with calcium. If he doesn't loose weight after a month or two on this diet reduce insects by half and see how that goes. A vet visit is a good idea just in case the weight problem is caused by a medical reason.

I will try to get pics, length and weight tomorrow. I do not know of a herp vet in the area but if it warrants a vet, I will look into finding one. Thx
