Tangerine Bell Albinos... Just look at this picture and imagine the potential..

KelliH Sep 17, 2003 03:15 AM

I know some here aren't all that crazy about the Bells, but trust me, there is sooo much to be done with this line. I am absolutely surprised that there has not been more interest in the Bells this year. We have to keep in mind that Tremper albinos (and Rainwaters for that matter) have not always looked the way they do today. Anyway, I can't wait to see what the future holds for the Bells, they are only going to get better (much better)!

That's cool that you outcrossed your Bells this year also. We should do some trading of hets next year

I actually crossed my Bells into hypo tangerines a couple years ago when I first got them, and it has definitely made a difference in the Bells I have produced this year. They are getting nicer each year for sure.

Looking at that Bell, what would be dark orange carrot-color on the tail base of a tremper or regular leo looks pale and washed-out. Makes me wonder if that particular albino mutation tends to wash out bright orange pigment. Or is he going through shed or something?

Tremper albinos have been on the market for several years now. They have been crossed into hypo tangerines for several generations by Ron Tremper and others. Do you have any idea what the typical Tremper albino looked like when they were first available? One word, brown:

The majority of them were NOT attractive albinos at all. It is only the past couple of years that we have begun to see the nicer, more colorful Trempers. Why do you think this is? Well, I'll tell you why, breeders have had several years to outcross them with tangerines (and jungles and stripes), the Trempers have been "refined" so to speak. The Bell albinos have only been readily available since 2002, I was lucky enough to get my first ones from Mark Bell back in 2000 but was not able to produce outcrossed hets until late 2001. The Bells line is still in its infancy, the originator of the line did virtually no outcrossing into tangs that I know of. By the way, the Bell albino you were referring to in the post above is from outcrossed tangerine breedings, he is one of the nicest ones I have ever produced, in fact it is the nicest Bell I have ever seen. And you know what's even better about him? I didn't have to manipulate the incubation temps even one degree to make him look the way he does!

Don't get me wrong here, I think the tangerine trempers are gorgeous! I am just more excited about the Bells becsuse of the potential the line has, and the fact that Bell albino tangerines and Bell "hybinos" have not been produced yet, it is the future of the Bell line that excites me I guess! It amazes me that some people think that you can create and refine these new morphs in just one or two years, they have no idea how many years of selective/line breeding it takes! One of my early theories on why many Tremper albinos produced by other breeders looked so brown and Tremper's looked bright and colorful was that when he first released albinos at a high price breeders were outcrossing them with low-quality normals and whatever they could find, and hence when they crossed back to get albinos, the colors weren't as nice.

I still wonder about the washed out orange on the tail, even in normals tail orange is usually pretty bright, but maybe that can be improved with selective breeding. I do think if you could get screaming orange on bells they would be much more attractive. I look forward to seeing what you can do with the morph, with the high quality stuff you are outcrossing with, there are bound to be some attractive results, whatever the genetic limitation (if any) of the morph may be. I agree it is always fun to be on the leading edge.

Do you think the reddish-brown color spots can be lightened up with selective breeding as well, just like the brown on trempers has lightened up?
