Fence lizard's eyes closed with gook

Esther Sep 26, 2009 09:39 PM

I have been moistening his eyes with Flukers reptile eye rinse and attempting to remove the gook with a moistened cotton swab, but it isn't helping. I am feeding him with a syringe, so he is fed and hydrated. Any advice on how to clear up his poor eyes? Thanks.

It's been a week, how is the lizard doing? If the eye is still infected, eye med's will have to be used and a proper exam to see if they is a foreign body or corneal trauma. A vet visit for sure, if it has not shown significant improvement since you posted.

The problem is finding a herp vet around here, in Queens, NY. He is not better. I have rinsed and q-tipped the eye repeatedly. He depends on my syringe feedings. I put a live waxworm in his mouth, but he spit it out.

New York actually is blessed with quite a few reptile vets when compared to other states. I would expect at least an hours drive though, at most. See the 2010 Reptiles USA magazine for a decent listing of herp vets by state. Also see www.arav.com for perhaps a larger listing. www.herpvetconnect.com is another list. Considering the time this has been going on, and the fact that it is not eating on it's own, the need for veterinary treatment is looking dire.

I hope these references help.

Thanks, Ian. I managed to get to my regular vet (I am on a very unfavorable work schedule this year, not getting out until after 5 p.m., hard to get to vets/post offices/ etc., and additionally am overwhelmed with work) and obtained some eye antibiotic cream. When I went to the lizard's tank to take him out and administer it, I found that he had died Rigor mortis had not yet set in, so he must have died within that hour. The old boy was at least 9 years old (being wc, I'll never know...), and except for this eye gook thing, had had a good life. Nice UVB light to bask under, plenty of rock ledges, good grub, etc. I have a young pair of Yarrows now and only hope they live as long as this old gentleman did.

I'm sorry to hear about your lizard but happy you do so well for your lizards.

Take care,

Ian
