Getting back into Hognose Snakes

thomasm06 Sep 26, 2009 11:48 PM

I have owned snakes since I was in elementary school. I love all snakes including poisonous ones. I live in the south so I have a unique opportunity to rescue snakes from people who "hate" them (shoot it because its there). I will make a post later with an example of one of the debates I had with one of these people.

Me and my girlfriend have just restarted my snake collection with two unrelated male and female Red Westerns (het. Albino). They are both three months old and eat pinkies. However, my female has refused food the last two feeding attempts. Hopefully this will just be a quick fast and she will be back on food soon.

I plan to breed them when they are ready and see if I can get some interesting little ones. I will keep posting from time to time.

Pictures of the little ones.

My Male:

P.S. If any of y'all have any tips, hints, or tricks that you would like to pass on to me I would really appreciate it.

My set up currently is:
2 10 gallon tanks, Under the tank heaters for heat, 2 lamps for light on timer with 16hr day 8hr night(extreme hogs care sheet), small corner water bowls, hides, and natural sandstone rocks.

Holy smokes those are nice. Where did you pick those up? It's great to see real red hogs.

I woul add a thermostat to the heat pads if you don't have one.

Hey thanks,

They are wonderful and healthy. Only have had them for a month but they seem to be doing well. I got them from Vincent Russo - cuttingedgeherp.com a real nice guy. I look forward to getting some more later when I have more space. If you don't already know him I would recommend him. He seemed to be willing to go out of his way for his customers.

I have them regulated with a thermostat :D forgot that piece. I also use an infrared thermometer for spot checking the temp.

I agree, those colors are outstanding! Looking forward to seeing albinos from those hets. As for refusing food, I've heard from others that a drawback to housing young snakes in a 10 gallon aquarium is that they might be reluctant to feed. If you're looking for feeding advice, you might try feeding in a deli cup within the aquarium (leaving overnight). Nice pickups!
