Plastic Hides

wRobio Sep 28, 2009 02:17 PM

I have seen these nice plastic hides that some people use. I saw some at a show, but had already spent my money, and did not think to ask where they came from. They came in three in three sizes, they are black, rectangular and had a little entry way.

If anyone knows of a good online source for something that fits that description, let me know.

Thanks

What I'm going to do is buy a few cat litter pans, turn them upside down and cut an opening. You have yourself a cheap hide box lol! I've done this before at it worked out great. The reptile basics hides look pretty nice too though.

That's a really good idea! I had trouble finding actual snake hides/caves big enough for my adult females that weren't too tall to fit in my CB70 rack. Seemed all the ones I found that were wide and long enough were too tall. I bought some boxes and cut them to size which is working for now, but I like the litter pan idea and will see if I can find some that would fit in my rack.

Only problem I've noticed with cat boxes is sometimes feces and shed get into the rim...
it's annoying.

My brother used to live with my wife and me and he used to drink those "weight gain power shakes" - anyways - I used to cut those down to size and use them as hides. They worked great.

Otherwise, plastic ice cream pails (during any of the holidays you can buy colored, opaque pails at any Walmart or Kmart - otherwise, if clear is okay with you - eat lots of ice cream). I don't have a problem with clear hides because my racks have opaque sides.

I know many people use the clay pot bottoms, but I prefer the plastic ones. They come in many sizes and depths and are cheap and easy to clean. Plus, cutting the hole to the right size is easier than trying to crack the perfect entrance hole with a hammer.

Margarine, Cool-Whip, and other empty food containers also work great. The grocery store is a far better (and more economical) place to find hides than any pet store - just keep your eyes open. Remember, your pets care more about function than they do decoration - nothing has to look pretty unless you want it that way.

For small animals, I go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy those clear plastic trays that sit under flower pots (6inch size). They cost less than a dollar each. I cout an appropriate sized hole, then paint it black. Then I let it sit for a week so there is no chance of any fumes being left before I put it in the cage. For larger animals, I use the same process but with the clear plastic deli style shipping containers.
