Found a snake

asgerdoftheuin Sep 17, 2003 07:29 AM

I live in south texas. In my front flower bed this morning, around 6, I saw a tiny little snake the likes of which I have not see before. It was about 8 inches long, darkish tan with a thin yellow stripe down it's back and regular darker brown blotches on its body. I could not see it's tail as the tail was in the guter drain. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks!

My guess would be a baby Checkered Garter Snake.

It is probably a Checkered Gartersnake. They are very common in South Texas.

There are a couple of pics of Checkered Gartersnakes here - www.intrepidtraveler.net/snakes/tmarcianus.html

Although I do agree with oldherper and chrish that is was more then likely a checkered garter, I have seen several Texas Brown snakes that have had thin dorsal stripes of an light tan to yellow color. Browns have a tendancy to have blotches on their body from brown to black in color and are variable in their base colors from grey and tan to dark red.
