i have horrible luck

TimS Sep 29, 2009 12:22 PM

since this is a lovely off topic forum you all get to here me complain lol ok story time

well I have been in need of a new rack system so i decided to go with good ol (cant state name or thread will get pulled) well I have had great results in past with this particular cage/rack supplier i guess my luck ran out. After two months of waiting very impatiently for this new rack it finally arrives this morning yay i was so stoked i start pulling out drawers screwing on little chrome knobs and go to hook up the thermostat and tape probe to heat tape and thats when i noticed that the heat tape was well curved so to say best way to describe it is take a tape messure pull it out a little bit and flip it upside down. So now the tubs when slid in and out rub on heat tape and the tape is directly hitting on the tubs at all times.
The recessed area for the heat tape to sit in seems to skinny so the heat tape is bubbled up ugh

Your quickest solution may be to just "trim" the heat tape.

You'd have to take the back off (bunch of screws). Remove the heat tape. Then trim off a bit of the edge, just make sure you don't cut into any of the conductive area, only the plastic border. Then put it all back together.

Would be faster than returning etc. But talk to J.R. first, I know he'll take care of you. BTW, I have six of the 30 slot version and they work GREAT for my baby BRB's. (chrome knobs was a dead give away) Only two or three litters(ish) away from having them all full!!!

Also, I'll check when I get home to see how mine are, but is the recess "undercut" like an upside-down "T" or a simple "U" channel? If undercut, maybe the heat tape is hanging up and not slipping in?

thanks for the ideas dave i will have to dbl check on how it is routed for sure tho. I think i am going to have to just trim off a little of the plastic on each side of the heat tape.
I was trying to be very careful how i said things in the post, i figured ppl would know who i was talking about but also realize i in NO way was trying to talk bad about said person and that i was just stating i have crappy luck lol :P plus made for good afternoon reading lol.

well once the kiddos get home i will run on over to part store since i dont have any star bits to take out the screws.

ps. im so glad im only the babysitter lol the reptiles give me enough head aches lol OH bit of good luck i went to check the breeding boas and it looks like we got some serious pre ovulation swell going on my square snake is now lumpy and oval lol

I know but maybe something has changed he needs to know about so he can tweak his manufacturing process. I'm a firm believer in "schtuff happens" and I don't trip about that, I'm more into how the "fix" is handled.....

IMO you don't touch a thing until you two have chatted and agree on a course of action.

i already got kids and the star bit and got to work on it lol. i pulled out all the heat tape and started trimming down one side, figuring better not enough then to much.
well after i got the one side done(with a few curves from my crooked eyes lol) i took it ran it back through and everything is good to go. there are very few spots here and there where i curved in and took to much plastic off where it still pops up but nothing serious at all.
It can be pushed down with beyond easy so the second the tub touches it the heat tape will go down but the rest is nice and flat as aposed to before where it was almost like a resistant bubble so to say.

Either me or the roomie whom ordered racks will get in touch with him just to inform him of the issue, tho i needed this to be setup asap. I had such a "ghetto rig" thing goin on before i couldnt wait for anything to be fixed and your idea for a trim was the perfect and right idea

I agree with Dave the place you bought it from - as they will know what to do. I believe you can also use a high temp silcone to stick the heat tape back down, but the place you bought from will know best how to fix it.
