Lights and timers

jsschrei Sep 30, 2009 01:28 PM

Can any type of light/fixture be set onto a timer? Which type do you use, flourescent or incandescent to set a photoperiod in your snake room?

Thanks in advance!

Any light that plugs in can be used on a timer, doesn't matter if it's incandescent. I don't use any artificial lights for my snakes. There are a few lights that are on in the room for other animals, which I try to remember to turn off at sundown-aside from that, i let the sun set the photoperiod.

As said, anything that plugs into your standard wall socket can be used with a timer. I use a basic lamp with a low energy bulb (60 watt equiv) to create the photoperiod since all of my snakes are in a basement (yes, I am *that* person). I have it set for a 13 hour day length right now and will probably drop it down to 12 at the end of October.

I asked because I live in the high desert of CA and the weather doesn't exactly cooperate with the photoperiod here. This will be my first season of breeding (very excited). We have about 7 months of "winter" weather so I am going to try to mimic their natural temps and photoperiods in the snake room. We had freezing night temps into June last year- not very typical, but you never know what is going to happen.
