going through the gates of the mountains

Cool boat ride! The time of evening sucked for taking pics, but figured I'd share anyway. The only wild life we saw was some deer & a few bald eagles.

I'm torn between envy and awe.

God I miss the rockies. Texas has better herping but is short on the peace and solitude of the northernmost states. Granite outcroppings, pine and aspen forest, wildlife all over, high altitude air...

PS--is it bad that I consider Amarillo at least 3x too big for me?

Thanks! I know, I would like to live in a state thet had more herps, but could never leave MT.

I have thought about Big Bend country, or maybe some part of Utah--places with herps and not a lot of people and something at least resembling mountains.

I get this way ever year around fall--I start to miss the aspen changing color and frost on the ground, and the elk in rut. Once you've stood outside in the cold and snow, with no one else around and watched elk courting and calling while you're hunched up in your cold weather gear...it's something you don't forget.
