New striped gecko found in FL? Already!

tcdrover Sep 30, 2009 07:50 PM

Kidding, it's just a house gecko. I love these guys. I live
walking distance from the sawgrass expanse that surrounds the
everglades, and it is nice to have anything in the house that
will help out with the bug problem.

Those new striped geckos look pretty neat though. They look kind
of similar to leopard geckos. I was trying to find a pic of that
new bird eating frog but I couldn't find a good one.

I found a colony of house geckos in Edison, New Jersey and they are well established and breeding very prolifically. They live at an apartment complex and over winter in the boiler rooms. I am sure some must perish yearly but enough make it to start other generations. I assumed someone originally released some to combat the roaches and the rest is history. My brother was a super there and told me about them 10 years ago and I started checking them out and my other brother still does their tile repairs and install and they are still there to this day. They are from what I understand established all over the USA.

That's pretty cool.

There are supposed to be established colonies of Tokay geckos
here in south Florida. I've never seen one here or know anyone
who has. I would love to have one of those huge geckos loose in
my house.

I've got an ant problem. I'm scared to fumigate because of my
dog & all of my boas. I'm reluctant to even use those 'roach
motel' typo commercial insecticides. Those tiny little ants are
all over, the conquered the kitchen and now they've advanced to
the boa room.

TC get those little ant motels the high quality ones made out of
metal work really well.
Place those ant Motels in high traffic areas,
the ant do the rest

Also i believe I've read about putting chalk lines on your thresholds and window points or any point of entry

I tried it appears to be helpful, they won't cross the chalk line

I need to do something about it. I'd kind of acquiesced to the
little buggers.

When I saw that they can get into closed, sealed bags of food and candy I kind of gave up the battle. I've been using ziplock
freezer bags on any food I buy that isn't canned or in the
fridge. I've been using vinager to try and wipe out their little trails.

I appreciate those links Lar. Thanks...tc

My Sister has Tokays living in/on her house in Sarasota FL.
She has 4 large ones that show up on the front porch every night.

She brought be a sick baby to try to save the other day...unfotunately I was not able to help it....I believe it had gotten into some kind of poison... so sad.

I have Tokay Gecko's all over my house at night and Giant Day Gecko's all over it in the daytime...I realy like it plus a resident wild 6' long Iguana and his harem. Since I now feed them the big Iguana comes to call when he's hungry and will now let you hand feed him. His name is Spike and he alows NO other Iguana to come in the yard...Thanks...I should add the yard is crawling with Brown Basilisk as well...Not to leave native stuff out as I have oodles of Corn Snakes in the yard as well.

I've seen plenty of brown basilisks. I work right by MIA and

I'm not into geckos as pets, but they are such beautiful lizards.

Thanks for posting those pics, those guys would probably get to
be oversized, XXXL lizards with all the bugs flying around over
here...
