Gray Ratsnake Question?

kfisher29 Sep 30, 2009 11:05 PM

I have a 2 1/2 foot gray ratsnake that ate a baby yellowbelly racer that I placed in it's cage a week ago because today I was cleaning the cage and there was no sign of the baby racer and no possible way this baby racer could have escaped from the critter cage with a sliding lid. I've kept ratsnakes for years and NEVER heard of or seen one eat another snake. My question is has anybody else here experienced a ratsnake eating another snake out of the blue? Thanks,Kevin

This is a prime example of why it's not recommended to house snakes together. ESPECIALLY when there is a large size difference.

Kevin, I'd go on the hunt for that racer. You say there is no way that racer got out of the cage? Think again. i have one of those critter cages and it came with a warning sticker "not for small snakes" cause they can get out where the sliding top meets the front glass. Though I'm not saying its not possible that it got eaten, its more probable that it got out. Give a small snake the slightest crack or give in a lid and it will get out.
I use fish tanks with two bricks on the top for baby snakes to hold the ends down tight. The adult tanks get clips but clips dont hold the ends down tight enough for the little guys.
Good luck finding him.
Mike.
