A couple of house snakes

Steve_Craig Oct 05, 2009 11:15 PM

No specific forum for housesnakes, so I figure here is as good a place as any. First two pics are a black/olive house snake. Last pic is a brown house snake. They'll never beat out other snakes for flashy colors, but they have a nice irridescent sheen to them. Steve

Steve,...those little guys are just awesome!

I just love their cute little eliptical(cat eye) pupils too!

I've never owned any personally, but several friends I have own many of them, and tell me that they have a voraciously insane feeding behavior. Is this what you've experienced with them as well?

Also, I and many others think that dark snakes that have that that iridescent shimmer are spectacular looking too. Reminds me of my Indigo's back in the early 70's.

Those suckers sure are tiny as hatchlings, but sure get up to size quick because of their eager dinner table habits..LOL!

Was this the case with yours too?

I loves my house snake I've got a female right now, WC import subadult, common brown. and she just demolishes mice usually (although she didn't eat this week, which is a first). I'd put her feeding response as more aggressive than my retics. She was the first colubrid I've kept since...2005 ? And the first baby colubrid I've had in many years, since like 98. Very pretty, neat eyes, and man oh man do they eat! It's like a reticulated python in attitude and feeding, but they're 1/10000th the size (300 grams vs 100 kilos)

I'm getting some more from Cherry this year too Hope to breed her next year, I love these guys. Can't believe I missed out all these years. She's grown pretty fast, even with a fairly steady feeding regime of one mouse every 5 days. She's maybe 2' now? Should be ready to breed in another 6-8 months. I got her she was maybe 15" long.

Doug, yes, they do have an insane feeding response. I think pound for pound, (or ounce for ounce) they are one of the strongest snakes.
If I take a F/T rodent and simulate movement in front of them, they constrict so hard it looks as if the head of the rodent is about to explode. If I place a rodent in without any movement or stimulation, they still hit it hard, but don't constrict.
I picked up mine when they had a little bit of size on them, but they are growing at a pretty decent rate. Steve
