after cutting up the last of my roll a few months ago i noticed i was down to3 pieces left. so i ordered up another and it came in yesterday.

so far i have been just cutting them a bunch at a time as needed. i would set up on the floor mark out each cut and unroll as i went... well that sucked!! so this time i did it a little differently.

i got myself set up in the garage on a work bench and hung the roll from the ceiling joists. i set up an aluminum track for a cutting edge and screwed down a 3/4" stock to use as a stop... now its as easy as rolling it out to the stop line it up with the edge of the bench to keep it as square as possible and zip a knife down the edge of the aluminum track and repeat a couple hundred times...

it worked out pretty good, not great but WAY better than i was doing it before. only issues i ran into was trying to keep the paper flat to the bench, and using a dull knife ugh... but for what its for everything was fine. i could have spent more time and come up with a more elaborate set up but i have alot to do today and needed to get it done.

I ended up cutting the whole roll and got about 40 at 4' and 85 or so at 2'. here are a couple pics let me know what ya think and even how you do it.

first off we are hanging from the joists just used a dowel and put two screws through to keep it from sliding out or off the hooks

and here is the bench set up for the 2' cuts, the 4' cut set up was the same just moved the wood stop out..

ohh and balloon fiesta started saturday so the view from my garage was pretty cool

and that is just a small fraction of them just the ones that can be seen from my house... ill get more pic later we might end up going this saturday

Hey Step, great idea but I'll go you one better.....

I made a sled to ride in the miter slot of my table saw. Very much like a cutoff sled.

The "cutting edge" has a metal bar with washers to provide the gap for the paper and is aligned with my saw blade. NO, the blade is fully retracted.

I simply set my fence to the size I want and go to town. With the sled made out of 3/4" plywood, the razor blade never contacts my table saw and I even set the blade to different depths to get multiple "fresh" cutting edges out of each blade.

ooooh hey i like it! i like that you just set the rip fence to the size you need thats great lol

only thing is i dont have a table saw *sniff sniff*

i think for the next time i am gonna rig something up like your cutting edge with the washers... something for the paper to slide under instead of over

nifty idea there. I just went ahead and bought then cutter/holder and cut pieces as needed. I tied a rope to it and marked with tape at length needed so all i have to do is line edge of paper up with beginning of tape pull until get stops then rip off. It is as easy as 1. 2. 3.

Many of the larger breeders use 9 inch rolls of Craft Paper and the steel cutters. This allows you to cut various lengths quickly and easily… you can rip about 10 sheets a minute. The steel cutters can be purchased on several online stores (do a Google search for deli paper, kraft paper or paper cutter so I don’t have to list a store name.) You can get an 18 inch cutter for $30; you can get a 24 or 30 inch cutter for $42; there is a 36 inch cutter online for $49. One website has all of these with free shipping. They also have some 700foot to one thousand foot rolls for cheap with free shipping….$30 to $50 depending on width.

What I would like to know is where you get the indented craft paper??

Anyone??

I get my paper through a local packaging supplier friend. It comes from Uline.com The savings through my friend is on the shipping as they order truckloads of various stuff.

I have one of the 24" steel cuters and don't like the rough edge it leaves. May be mine but it does not cut indented craft paper cleanly.

That's why I have the jig and use a box knife. still use the cutter to hold the roll. And not sure how fast I cut them but still very fast to go through a whole roll.

I use a 24" roll cutter but I do not use indented paper. I like the 75 pound flat Kraft paper better than the indented Kraft paper. I got the cutter and I get my paper from Uline but the shipping is expensive. There was a guy in the Charlotte NC area several years ago who tried to make a go of a business selling precut Kraft paper to snake keepers. AFAIK the business did not work out for him.
