Snake Venom Extraction

chelseynicole21 Oct 06, 2009 12:19 PM

Does anyone know how to get started being a snake venom extractor? Do I need a degree or something? I am trying to get into the field and I have been looking for information on the net but I cant seem to find anything. Can someone please help?

This comes up regularly on this and other boards. The short version is that you need a lot of education and a lot of money to get started and then you will probably go bankrupt quickly because a few big names already have the market saturated, and reputations that a newcomer can't compete with.

If there were money to be made, everyone here would be doing it...

I hate to be negative, but it's almost certainly not a viable business today.

I don't know if he wants to start his own business or just work for someone putting his life on the line milking snakes in general for a dollar per hour wage.... I'm sure the latter would be easier to get into but know very little about milking....

Would be neat though to work with such a different array of animals routinely

Good point. If you're looking to work for one of the existing operations the reasonable thing would be to get in touch with them and ask what they would be looking for.

However, the ones I'm familiar with usually have one person (usually the owner) who does all the extractions because the liability is just too high to pay someone else to do it.

In most cases, you would be lucky to get a job cleaning cages (because a lot of them have people doing that for free (or very cheap) just for the training/experience.
