RoadSpawn Oct 06, 2009 02:38 PM

Hello
What is the basic husbandry for keeping a Cuban Hybrid indoors? Ambient temps, basking temps, enclosure dimensions? Solid or mesh enclosure? thanks

I was going to ask the same question a few times. We have green igs, but maybe someday a rock iguana might come by. These are a few sites besides the people here I have looked at.
If anybody else has a something add please!

Since we dont know what you know or dont, more specific questions might make it easier.

We have an issue of Reptiles Magazine that has an article about Rhino iguana care by John Binns. He has a "minimal enclosure" building. What do you think the smallest footprint size for indoors would be? We are in Ohio, so we could build a large outside pen for some of the summer, or do you keep yours inside all year? I asume they get stressed from relocating them in and out. We are seeing more and more cyclura at the reptile show lately, So you never know, somebody might need to rehome one near us.
Thanks

Sean, in that same article is a picture of my enclosure. Mine are outside and in by just closing the windows. John's enclosures, though small are really only used for night and bad weather. He has the ability to get them all out in day cages. His routine is rather unique. I would think about your case another way, How big can you build indoors? They will use the space (an adult cyclura) so go as big as you can, minimum of 4'x4' maybe? The outdoor cage would be great in the summer. The stress is minimal, they get used to it, they hate to come in from my experience. You will also notice a change in behavior. You really wanna know what a cyclura is like, keep him outside on a sunny day

Thanks! I love your enclosure. We are not in a rush for a cyclura right now, but for once I would like to have everything planned and ready before getting an ig lol. We can do 4x8 right now but it would be in view of a male green ig, and only one window. Hopefully our son will find a job and when he is on his feet we could use his room (bunch of windows).
We know how demanding it would be. And as much as I enjoy our green iguanas, I feel like a bit more of a challenge. We got a chance to see a pure Lewisi up close, awesome, but I like all of the different ones also.

Nice Tom! I see you have a live plant with the albino iguana iguana. Someday If we ever go down to watch the Nascar race, I'd love to see.

hi Sean, I am livining in Germany so there is no chance to keep the iguanas outside..therefore you have to work with lots of basking spots and a heating system to get the right temperatures. My enclosure is approx. 10m˛ (3,5meter x 3meter).

Attached a few pics:

Very Nice! I like your dome fixtures, I am guessing they are mercury vapor UVB bulbs right? and are they live trees? Thanks!

yes. Living plants. I am using for the lighting 10 x 36W tubes, 5 x 80-100W PAR spots,1 x 100W PowerSun and 1 x 300W OsramUltra Vitalux very close to the animals (max. 2ft distance)
