Legality of "Accidental" imports...

khooten Sep 17, 2003 11:53 AM

I have heard from reputable sources that occasionally C.j.xanthalophus get imported from Africa accidentally with shipments fischers and or meru's. What is the legality on acquiring these accidentals? I think we would all like to see some new African xanthalophus blood here in the states.

while there are sometimes that other species are shipped as a different species it does not happen often. For one reason when USFW inspects the shipment and if they find these incorrectly labeled animals without CITES documentation the entire shipment can be confiscated. Neither the importer nor the exporter wants this to happen as neither will be able to make their money. Technically if an animal like that does make it through inspection there really is nothing that can be done then, but that animal can never be re-exported as it does not have the paper trail and legal CITES documentation.
