6 days in Costa Rica - Part 2

AndyH Oct 06, 2009 09:08 PM

My girlfriend making her way through the mangroves.

Ruschii tree boa

One of several sloths. This one was a 2-toed. Neat animals, but boring as hell. Basically a termite nest with fur. Forget your camera? No big deal, just come back and take pictures of it the next day.

4’ Fer-de-lance. Amazing camouflage.

Northern cat-eyed snake. We found this guy drinking out of our pool on 3 different nights. The pool was a semi-natural no chlorine variety, and the local amphibians were using it as a breeding pond.

I’m not really an insect or arachnid enthusiast, but here are a couple I found interesting.

That mussurana breaks my heart Those captured my imagination when I read about them in god-knows-what book, but I've never seen one in person, and never seen one for sale.

Nice trip--you lucky, lucky person

Yeah, I know how you feel. It was cool to see one at all, but a real shame I didn't find it alive.

Another of those burly Montana bulls. What’s the largest you’ve found out there?

It was my second time in CR. There are a lot of places with large herp populations, but what really amazes me about CR is that each one I found seemed to be of a different species.

As info for all you guys – the round trip was about $600 from Seattle. We stayed in a sweet place called Pacific Edge with a pool, bird watching platforms and whatnot for $50/night. There are also some cheaper places for $25-30/night that are just 2 beds and a bathroom that I’d stay in if traveling with a buddy; though you’ll probably want to spend the $50 if taking family.

The rainy season has started down there, and continues though around the end of November. Places are usually cheaper during this time of year. Herps are pretty active year round; though finding snakes is a little easier to find when it’s sunny.

My lucky bastard of a brother went to CR once on a school thing--some sort of Spanish language program--and didn't even bring back pictures of herps Lots and lots of pictures of girls and the scenery but no herps!

He did say he saw lots of boas though. Lucky SOB.
