It could be something genetic or an incubation induced anomaly... Either way its a real cool lookin hog... Guess it just comes down to proving it out... People can say what they think it is all day...

Good luck... It would be nice if it proves genetic... There is always room for a new pattern morph...

Yes, he's a very handsome specimen. I wish I had him in my collection!!!

He has a fully striped belly, see next post..

I wouldn't call this a "striped belly". It's just all black ventral scales, not entirely uncommon amongst Westerns although a completely solid black belly without any trace of yellow or spotting I believe is a bit more rare. Now if there was yellow on the ventral edges and in the middle of the ventrals there was a black stripe, then I would agree that to be a black striped belly.

I have several specimens that have almost completely black ventrals which have been passed down to some of their offspring. I've not tried to do any constructive breeding for this trait however to determine whether it is a line trait or a recessive one (yet). But I have been interested in this aspect of Western coloration as well considering that this is a sometimes overlooked possible project possibly worth proving out one way or another. If anybody has any extensive knowledge on what exactly this is, I would be interested in hearing about it.
