Season comming to an end

daneby Oct 08, 2009 10:12 PM

I've been out a few times in the past week when the temps were 50f & found a few things, but not too much. I think my herp season is over though, its going to be in the 20s during the day & single digits for night time lows here for the next few days. Once it starts getting this cold, even if it does warm up into the 50s for another week, the herps are pretty much staying indoors.

I found 3 little scorpions the other day, the only 3 I saw all year.

Thanks,

Dan Eby

Nooo- say it isn't so!

Hopefully, you haven't posted ALL your pics from this season to keep us going through the winter, buddy!

Todd,
I have a few more, but nothing too special, for the most part I've been posting them as I get them.

Has stuff been out in your area lately?

Wrong answer, homeslice!

Slowing down here, too, but not over yet. We've got a cold front sitting on top of us that's been here for a couple days now, but supposed to warm back up beginning tomorrow.

2 more baby atrox in the last couple days and a baby t-rat.

Heading out west this weekend, though- HOPEFULLY find me some cool stuff!

Those are nice! Hopfully you find another eastern hog this season. That gray headed one was awesome!

Dan, how many anulatta do you have now? Love those guys, still working to finish up my locality groups. It's tough, man!

That one is awesome!

I have 16 of them (normals, albinos, pinners, spotted line). I love em, they are defenetly my favorite milksnake.

That sucks its already that cold up there. I went out last weekend and found a few snakes easily as temps are still around 70 to 80 F in daytime here in SC.

Justin,
Today was 23 for a high, & tomorrows going tobe colder. The forcast calls for highs in the 40s after that though.

I like that one too. It either just finished a leopard frog or a toad when I found it.

Justin - Where are you located down in SC?

I'm planning a trip this spring to visit a friend in Charleston. What month would you suggest for the best reptile activity - April or May? Any suggestions on areas to check out?

antelope Oct 09, 2009 02:48 PM

I'll help you through the rough times Dan, this winter should be mild and wet, great for winter herping down here! You've had a great year up there, stay safe and warm!

Todd - That's an awesome king. I trust you Southern guys will post enough pics to last us yanks through our long cold winter.

antelope Oct 10, 2009 09:40 AM

Dan and Andy, I'll sure do my part! We had a challenge last year at SWCHR, to see who could get the first venomous of the new year. I went out about 1:00 in the afternoon and found that king for a first snake, found a rough green out, and a coral under some cover. We've only seen snow here 3 times in my lifetime, I'm 47 this Nov.

only 3 snows in 50 years?! Where the heck are you?

daneby Oct 10, 2009 07:49 PM

Were any of the 3 times like this?

Dan

antelope Oct 11, 2009 12:45 AM

Corpus Christi, Texas, lol, no way, we built a real snowman for the first time in my life a few years ago! The others were slush men! It was all gone in 3 days time, maybe 6 inches, haha! Then, back to 70 degree normal winters! Santa wears beach britches and flip flops down here!

you're making me homesick for the Rockies! here in the panhandle, we get real cold sometimes, but nearly never get real snow. I think I've only seen one snowfall here that broke the 2' mark...back up north that'd barely have been worth mentioning

varanid Oct 09, 2009 04:09 PM

we're getting down into the 30s at night now, which doesn't eliminate field herping but certainly does reduce the fruits of my labor. It'll be November before it's really over...of course that's not too far off.

And joy, our heater went out today >.>

daneby Oct 09, 2009 09:19 PM

lol, you're lucky it happened now, my heater dosnt go out until it gets below 0 out.

Dan,

Beautiful garter! What species?

Matthew

daneby Oct 09, 2009 09:15 PM

Matthew,

The 1st garter is a dull looking redsided, 2nd is a wandering, & the one in the last 2 pics is a plains garter.

Dan Eby

jhnscrg Oct 13, 2009 06:29 PM

Dan,

Would you believe I'm getting rained out now? Maybe I'll find some Garters or stray watersnakes tomorrow after 4.5 inches of rain in under 24 hrs!
Thanks. One of those looks like a Texas Garter with that bright orange stripe.

I know the feeling. The weather is heading the same direction at my herpin' holes over in Eastern WA. Thanks for posting all those great pics this year.

daneby Oct 09, 2009 10:52 PM

Thanks Andy
