A winter WARNING to all...........

reiko Sep 17, 2003 01:15 PM

as our dragons go down for their winter sleep, be cautious, if anyone is using space heaters ect in their homes be careful that they do not have teflon coated parts inside of them, it can be deadly to our pets, small animals such as birds especially, but i thought i would convey the warning to you all also to be careful with teflon coated products such as space heaters and non stick pans etc. many things can be hazardous to our animals that would cause us little to no discomfort at all. Just putting it out there to make you all aware of the dangers.

its mostly birds that have this problem, it kills them quite quickly and its a terrible death, i have not heard of a reptile dying this way, but i would not want anyone to have to find out the hard way, i imagine it can be just as deadly to them as it can be for our birds. just last year there was a couple that had bought a new space heater for their birds to take the chill out of the air for them, they woke in the night to terrible screams and both birds died in their arms, the heater was teflon coated, the fumes were deadly.

I had know idea about that possible danger. I don't use space heaters but do use the Teflon pans. Guess it was good I always used the exhaust on my stove. Thanks for the warning. Kerosene heaters too are bad. I once adopted a cat that was born in a house that used the kerosene space heaters and one was bad and threw fumes and gasses all through the house. The poor cat was damaged neurologicaly and did not last to long. Poor cat i tried my best with it, but to no avail

its when the pans overheat or burn that you get the fumes. we dont use anything that is non stick or coated in teflon. even scotch guard on a new couch can be deadly to birds, we have to be very careful of what we bring into the house.

heated, I don't know about now, but several years ago the military and restaurants were not allowed to use them in cooking.

i really couldnt say, usually its the fumes from the teflon that are dangerous, is the bug stop a dried on paint product? if you painted the stuff on something like a pan and then let it heat up and burn i imagine the fumes could be dangerous, doubt tho its harmful just as is, know that so many people use that on their roach bins, and i have never heard any problems with it.
