Woma not feeding

Sharkman20 Oct 10, 2009 10:45 AM

I bought a female Woma python at the Sacramento reptile show a few weeks ago and she seems to be completely uninterested in food. I have offered food 3 times, about a week apart and she shows zero interest as if the food wasn't even there. I first offered a f/t hopper mouse, then a f/t pinky mouse which I left in overnight, then a f/t anole on the third attempt thinking a lizard might get her attention. She's defecated twice since I've had her so I know she was eating before. I have the cage temps at 90 on the warm end and about 78 on the cool end, with paper towel for substrate and fresh water every few days. She seems very healthy and is often on the move around the cage and seems very curious, but for a species with a reputation for being great feeders, it has me puzzled. If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your food items are way too small and try live first!

I would offer a f/t fuzzy rat or large pink rat. Leave it in overnight...don't try to offer on tongs or tease feed. Also, wait at least 10 days between attempts. She is still in the transition phase, and if she has defecated, she probably just needs some more time to settle in.

Good luck!

Sharkman20, did you contact the seller to see what they were feeding it? Womas can be finicky at first and may only eat certain food items. I would try to find out what it had been eating. If you can't do that try a warmed frozen thawed brained fuzzy mouse. You can try offering it off tongs in front of the woma or you can try off tongs slightly rubbing the snake on the neck or front half of the body to get a pushing and feeding response. I am also assuming you have a hide in the cage and all the conditions are correct. I had a hatchling this year that would only start on African soft furred rat fuzz. Good luck! Tom

It's a new home, give it a bit more time to get settled. Got a hide box?

Sharkman20 Oct 11, 2009 11:49 AM

Yup I have a hide box. I sent the seller an email too beore I posted this but I haven't heard back yet. I figured it couldn't hurt to get more than one opinion. I'll just give her some more time and when I hear back from the seller I'll try whatever he was doing. Thanks guys.
