Lavender Texas Rats....

byron.d Oct 10, 2009 11:47 PM

There were brought up the below post and I wanted to share some photos of mine.
Frank is 150% right that these are some of the most difficult snakes to photograph in regards to accurately capturing their colors. Of course being mean as hell doesnt help the situation much either.....

Here is my adult pair. The female is the one with darker color and the more pronounced pattern. I would consider my male to be T negative but he has dark eyes - same eyes as the female..

Here are three hatchlings produced this year - not by my pair though.

The color and contrast are very accurate - at least on my monitor.
I have a group of 2.2 babies - all nasty little monsters. My adults are very tolerant of handling. My male way more so than my female.
The last photo here is my female the day I got her.

Thanks for looking.

Although there is some concern about the purity of TX Rats and Black Rats.
For me, the 'Texas Rat attitude' is a pretty good marker. It's not proof or any kind of guarantee, but when I see that relentless bad-ass attitude I feel pretty good about them being all Texas Rat!
I've had a few nasty Black Rats over the years, but never as mean as any Texas Rat.

Take Care.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean..LOL! It's definitely not proof you could go to court with, but it sure seems to be one of their "trademarks"..LOL!

And sure. there are many nasty tempered ratsnakes of all kinds like you mentioned, just as there are many mild-tempered individuals too. But my experience with them has also been that they as a general rule are pure HELL ON WHEELS!..LOL!

you hit the nail on the head Doug!

That is an awesome leucistic!!! I was looking for one with the random, single orange or red scales somewhere on the body, for what seemed like forever. I gave up after a while - I think two years. Then last year someone put an ad in the local paper for an adult male luecistic for next to nothing. I figured I'd check it out just to see it.... It was EXACTLY what I had been looking for. Perfect eyes, perfect snake, two bright orange scales on the whole snake. Oh yeah, mean as can possibly be.

I have an 8 year adult male lucy with orange tipping on every scale on his body he a a color like white and a orange hue like one of those orange push up pops and is baby tame as well. Also he is pushing 5.5 to 6 feet as well.

Thanks for responding Frank. Yes, I certainly understand if you don't have a decent camera available right now to take a good quality photo with, because as you mentioned, cell phone camera's SUCK for taking even halfway decent snake pics. Heck, sometimes I can hardly tell what KIND of snake some people post on the "what kind" forum for ID purposes with their sad cell cameras..LOL!

So whenever you get around to getting one, or borrowing one, I'll look forward to some pics of that orange-tipped specimen.

Sounds simply stunning. I cant say that I've ever heard of one like that much less seen one.

I'm glad that male is doing well for you. He was one of the best looking hatchlings I'd ever seen.

Frank, for the love of Panterophis, get a freakin' camera or borrow/steal one...let's see a flamin' pic!

DMong Oct 11, 2009 06:49 PM

Wow!!,..that's really cool!. What are the odds you would find one exactly like you wanted with just a few orange scales??..LOL!

Seems like alot of stuff happens by weird chance in this world.

Yeah, from what I've seen, those Lavender's are a lot more interesting than some of the other Rat morphs.

I really like those guys, and thanks again for the pics!
