Attn. Gofer and anyone else...Need help w/ 1st Gopher and eggs.

Warren May 25, 2003 12:17 PM

Hello everyone,

I have a few questions about Gopher snakes and their eggs.
1)My female Albino Sonoran Gopher just had her pre-egg laying shed. I set up a nest box and have her on about 84 degree temps. Due to the damp moss and 84 degree temps, the humidity is causing some condensation on the side of the cage. CAN a Sonoran Gopher stand the high humidity from now until she layes her eggs?
2)Can you incubate the eggs at the same temps as Corn snake eggs?(Mine are incubating at 83 degrees)How many days will it take the eggs to hatch at this temp?

Thanks in Advance!!
Warren

that was written by Del Alspaw and published in the October, 2002 Chicago Herpetological Bulletin. The Article is "Breeding Pituophis". Good luck Warren.

Hello Warren,
glad to hear your Sonoran is doing well and ready to lay eggs. I usually don't have any condensation on the tank sides because of the egg laying box being mostly enclosed. I would try to keep the moisture down inside the tank and maybe use a tighter fitting tupperware tub or something like that. As far as the temps go, i think 83 will be okay, i am incubating both my corn and gopher eggs at 81.5-82.5 (depending on where they are in the incubator.) Last year i had a clutch laid on 6/30/02 and they hatched on 8/27/02 at 84 degrees. And the article Terry mentioned is a great help, i highly recommend it also. Hope all goes well, keep us updated.
Have a good one,
