I really like their look / pattern.
I want to add some to my collection.
I always check them out in the forum and classifieds.
So why don't I have any?
Pricing - sellers are placing too much of a premium
on them. In my opinion, they are over priced.
Just my 2 cents.

lep1pic1 Oct 13, 2009 01:56 PM

They are very hard to find and some locals in fact are rare.

i have a trio of them i have been raising up since 07'. the weird thing bout them is there 3 years old one girl is 80 grams the other bout 100 and the boy is right around 20. all have always eatin twice a week for ever. i dont know much bout them or there size dif to westerns. or if there even is one?? i have a buddy who just picked up a pair from a show that are monsters the girl is 500 grams the boy is over 100. from the other side mikey v has a smokin mexican male thats 4 years old 15 grams and a proven breeder.
any knowledge or opinions would be greatly appriciated.
also both girls i have are in blue right now and seem to be ovulating???

pic is 2 weeks old

Last year was our first year producing them. I understand and agree with the higher price. They are slow growing to breeding size which is usually smaller than westerns. The babies are smaller and clutches smaller. When the eggs are a few weeks off I freeze up just born or unborn mice pinks. I find they start on room temp tiny pinks without to much fuss. They are always ready to act like little cobras. We enjoy them and added two more females that will be ready next year.

i have 2.2 brewster co mex hogs and i love them. I should have babies this coming season.

I've been breeding kennerlyi (from two different and quite distinct w. Texas localities) for several years now, and can't get enough of them. And I too feel the price is justified, especially for locality-specific animals. Mexicans are smaller, have smaller clutches, and (from some locales) can be more difficult to start feeding than standard nasicus. They are moreover far rarer-both in the hobby and in the wild.

I much prefer the beautiful, subtle and variable color and pattern of kennerlyi as well.

I made a post months back about overpriced morphs and I still stand by that post. Some morphs are high but the breeder has a right to charge what they will. That is American capitalisum at its finest I will always support there right to do so.On the other hand these locality mexican hognose are very valuable to me more than most albinos.I say raise the price and keep true to the locality. Please dont hate me.............

Well the babies I produce next season are going to be F1s.
I honestly wont know what to charge for them...because I know they more than likely will need to be feed scented pinks and some people dont like that....even though I never understood why its not all that hard and only takes a sec 10secs outta your day.
Thanks

Being a big fan of alterna and pyros for many years, I can appreciate your desire to keep the mexicans locale specific. I fully intend to have the best of both worlds with my axanthic mexican when/if he reproduces. My axanthics will always be kept as pure county specific Az. kennerlyi. Others may get into the project and cross them out to New Mexico and Texas locales, but I will keep my stock pure.

Brad those are top notch! Chris, yours will look exactly like his. The prices are justified if you spend more time getting them started. I've had some easier ones, but most were hard to stay on mice. I lizard scent, and use live, so I usually don't have a problem getting them started, just getting them off scented. Seems they want to come out of brumation fired up, then change their minds midway through spring. The adults aren't a problem at all, they're HOGS, lol!

got to say i love my mexicans they are stubborn, beautiful and ready to give you an ear full at a moments notice just the way i like my women. lol. the further south you go they tend to be much lighter with a true silver background. as for the price i dont think i've seen an unreasonable price out there to date and once you get to work with them i'm sure you'll agree. this year i have two four year old hidalgo mexican females but sadly no male so anyone out there that can help let me know. first pic is my proven male who just went on a eating binge and tops the scale out at 23 grams next to his offspring, then a hidalgo female and the last is the comparison of two localitys. southern texas area and marathon.

CFlowers Oct 14, 2009 10:07 PM

Those first two are AWESOME...I bet my male w/c Brewster Co would like those

CF-

Just wondering what specific locale your male is from (since Brewster is a pretty big county-roughly the size of Rhode Island )

I have breed locality mexican hognose for about 20 years now. I have kept kennerlyi from both South Texas and West Texas, as well as Southwestern NM. I much prefer the West Texas animals. They seem to do much better in captivity, and I think that they are better looking snakes. Most people that I have heard horror stories from had South Texas stock. The mexicans are much smaller snakes. My largest female is just over 300 grams and my largest male is just over 100 grams. Both of these are very large for west Texas kennerlyi. My average clutch size is just over 13, but have clutches as large as 26. West Texas kennerlyi are GREAT rodent feeders, most wild caughts will take an unscented mouse within days of capture (probably because most are very hungry). With proper diet, a female can double and triple clutch with no ill effects. They are long-lived snakes and make great pets (if you don't mind a little hissing). I have tons of data on these animals if anyone is really interested.

Bryan-

Haven't kept them as long as you, but I entirely agree with everything you said. What locales of west TX have you been working with?

Brad,

We currently have North Marathons, FM 2810s, Davis Mountain Estates, and a single female from Coyanosa that I have been crossing with a Balmorhea male. I used to breed pure Balmorhea snakes as well as some from US67 in Pecos county and some really cool Langtry snakes (I wish that I had them back, they were cool and VERY hard to get).
