Question on late breeding this season

drasticplastic Oct 12, 2009 11:56 PM

Ok so this is my dilemma. (sorry if this is a long story) My wife and I have been in the process of buying a house since mid May, hopefully we should FINALLY close and have the keys at the end of this monty at the latest. I have one albino female that I wanted to breed this year but I have been holding out until we moved. I am afraid that I might have missed this season since it's so late in the year but I'm going to try anyway when we get to the house. I checked on her today and I'm not sure if it's the two large rats I fed her a few days ago, or if she's ovulating by chance. She has that deflated look and her scales are separated, not her normal look after a meal. I fed her two large rats because my male refused to eat for some reason. I am wondering, do you think I should pair them up now and stop waiting? How will the 60 mile drive to the new house affect her if things work out with her and the male? Will they resume breeding after moving them to their new room or will the drive stress them out? Now, if I want until the beginning of next month, do you think I missed my shot for this year? She is the only female that I have ready to go this year and I was looking forward to it. Let me know what you guys think about everything, and again, sorry for the long post.

Where do you live what state ? Because right nmow is the beginning
of the next breeding season('09 - '10 ) for me in N. IL.

I'd just put them together after the move but if you want you
could try them now also , either way IMO

Right now I'm living in Newark, Ca. (about 30 miles southeast of San Francisco) and I'm moving to Tracy, Ca. (about 60 miles east of San Francisco) I'll probably end up just pairing them up after the move so I don't stress them out in the middle of breeding. Thanks for your input.

I live in Maine and last year, in the middle of my first breeding attempt, we had an ice storm that knocked out power for a few days. When the snake room was getting dangerously cool, I moved all the snakes to my Nissan Xterra, which I kept running with the heat on for 18 hours. Electricity was restored and I returned the animals to their enclosures.

You'd assume such a disruption would blow any chance of successful breeding, but about a week and a half later, a big ovulation, copulation, and a healthy litter later on.

These critters are resilient! Nature has programmed them to breed. What I believed would be a season ending disruption didn't even phase them.

I suspect a few hours in the car won't end his breeding season, but, you never know.
