You should be commended for that alone, 4 is very old for them. We lost our original male breeder russian dwarf hamster recently, but its nice knowing he had a good full life and we helped make that for him.
He was so cool, he got along with ANY other hamster, ones that did not get along with others we put him in with, he would go up to them and when they screached, he would stand on his back legs and pat their face with his paws.... it was so cute.
He also very actively helped out with his babies, cleaning and caring for them, once they were weaned, he would play with them for hours and be so patient. He had a sky tower to retreat to when he got tired that they could not follow him, but when he came down it was so adorable to watch all the babies run to daddy and romp with him..... he would get in his big enclosed wheel and all the babies would follow him in and when he ran in it, babies would come flying out all over the place, hit the shavings and run to climb back in with dad.
Strange how attached we can become to such a simple other life form, but also how unique some are. They add so much to our lives
*hugs*
