Incubator

ronin3886 Oct 14, 2009 11:57 AM

I have my first hookup going on right now and I need to know what is a good incubator to use and where I can get one. I am hoping that my Axanthic and Spider will pair so I might have two clutches. I say that so you can get an idea of size of the incubator needed.

Do you intend to expand breeding in the near future? Are you always going to stay around 2 clutches a year?

Two options
1) Buy a Hovobator and a thermostat as a backup.

2) Build your own incubator out of a cooler or minifridge. Not that hard to do and if you need I can give you photo instructions of the one I just built.

I built my own and have run it through a couple of test runs and am looking at tweaking it a bit to have more even tempratures. I haven't incubated any clutches yet am just trying to be prepared. Hope the information I can give is helpful.

I intend to have more in the future but not right now. I only have the two pairs ready to go right now.

if youll only have the 2 pairs then i would just buy a hovabator for now. if you expand in the future then you can get a bigger incubator. hovabators run around 35-45 dollers. i use the one without a fan and have great results with colubrids, i have not yet incubated any ball ython eggs.

I just hatched 2 perfect clutches from Hobavators. On the advice of a poster here I got some Hatchrite and put a small tub of water in the center to keep the humidity right.

HovaBators

.....cheap....work....

I use up to 4 of them...this year I ran 3 ,filled them, plugged in forth but they started hatching so I unplugged the 4 th and just refilled the first three as needed for a second time....filled 2 a second time actually....don't know how many females dropped....?....close to 20......

kinda odd having potential thousands of dollars in ball eggs in a $15 used incubator.......LOL......duh....

.....don't try this at home.....!

......NO FAN....

I built my own out of a stand up freezer last year and it hatched EVERY egg I put in it except the 2 weepy one I knew wernt going to make it in the first place. Just thought id share my "equlizer method" I used a 41q tub with lots of holes in the top of it and placed it over my heat tape on the bottom of the inc. In the 41q I put a layer of bricks half way to the top filled in around the bricks and over them with perlite and then filled it with water (I figured it would only help with huidity)......it did.

Reptipro 5000 is what I am buying this year.
$175 shipped on Ebay.
Punch in temp, fill water tray...and go.
Simple as that.

I've heard they're pretty good.

Have you read any reviews on this incubator? I've been looking at one of these and have only read a couple of reviews.

I've heard some good things about it, and posted a while back on here about it.
Last season I lost two eggs, and two eggs (pastels) came out kinked...so I don't want to play games again this season. That season I was incubating in a mini fridge incubator I made myself.

I'll check into the post. That sucks about your clutch and I can say that I know the feeling. I've been sticking with maternal incubation but I'm looking to upgrade. The babies that I have produced that last two years don't seem to be as fat as some of the babies that others post. And this year, I had a clutch go bad...not sure why, it was a small, unexpected clutch. The eggs looked fine and were developing veins then on about day 15 they basically went flat.

Thanks,

W. Smith

I use a Nature's spirit incubator. If you use shoe box sized tubs, you can fit up to a dozen clutches in there. With the egg boxes I use, it fits six. I've found it to be very reliable, though I do at some point want to try my hand at constructing my own.
