Spotty Leucistic Tex. Rat?

ZackHulihan Oct 15, 2009 12:44 AM

So Today I came across a leucistic texas rat snake at work that had probably a dozen bright orange-red scales and yellow hue. I saw the animal at our store about a year ago and it had none of these traits, it was a snow white rat snake, pretty young. I also know of one of its siblings that has the same thing going on. Just wondering if this is normal in Leucistic Texas rats or if something funny is goin on with these ones? I'm not a rat snake guy (yet??) but this one caught my eye. Thanks

Yes, I've bred Texas rats for a few years and leucistic ones often develop a few small orange spots as they age.

Well, it's not nearly as common as just the pure white form of leucism, but orange and yellow are part of their natural color sceme, and these colors do tend to pop up now and then in some specimens.

There are many other variable forms of leucism that display a weird array of colorful spotting and patches(calico) of color as well, but not necessarily in just Texas Rats, but other types of snakes too.
