Recomended breeders list

jamesalternafan Oct 15, 2009 02:24 PM

Just some quick things that strike me.

I can tell you which wild caught stock my snakes descended from but because I have no photographic proof or an official looking family tree I am not eligible for the list. Not that I am complaining, it is just the nature of the list, but that seems a little odd to me. I personally like the idea of the list it adds a little confidence to the origin of the snakes. It certainly takes a hard nosed approach but maybe that is what he locality community needs.

Further I hope from this point on when I purchase from people on the list that they include with the snakes I buy, without me asking for it, a family tree and photos of each generation dating back to the wild caught snakes. I have not had any family trees or photos sent to me at this point so I am automatically restricted from the list. It seems like the list can never grow if the people listed do not provide this information with their snakes.

Is it a royal PITA to post the family tree data and photos that are submitted for approval? And how do we know the original wild caught are authentic?

Despite the lists best efforts there will always be doubt as to whether the animals are locality or not. Especially when breeders have so many animals that get mixed together in their snake rooms.

Good points-beyond the the first wc generation, it would be hard to get your lines on the list without carefully compiled documentation and photos. That is why the alterna hobby as a whole needs a computerized registry going forward. Joe has said he is going to discuss this with Todd Lapitta, and I for one am anxious to see what they come up with.

Whatever it is, it may not be of much help to those who haven't maintained adequate documentation up to now-but it will make things a lot easier in future. But yes, there will always have to be an "honor system" to some degree. With a registry, cheating will just be harder.

I think once you acquire locality alterna and are in control of your own collection (and are not caring for 600-1,200 snakes LOL), you’d have to be a mental midget to unknowingly mix the wrong localities together, and Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies is typically NOT the type of person that’s going to make the Recommended Breeders List. Well, hopefully not...lol.

To be fair I feel that anyone who breeds alterna and sells them in an ethical fashion should be given the opportunity to be included in the breeder list. I say this because the list is really for the good of the website and for newcomers to the alterna hobby. A true category should be just blairs, just alterna and both alterna and blairs morphs.

I do feel that if a breeder is going to claim in print that they produce animals of a specific locality they should have to show some proof. I also think the breeders need to submit pictures of there breeder snakes even generics just so they are not obvious crosses.

Please leave the people who are on the list there and just delete all the locality info untill it is verified. Give a fair opportunity for newcomers to the hobby to find good breeders who follow good business practices. The list is better as a resource for the buyer not a resource for the sellers.

By the way, I am personally all about locality alterna, I doubt I am going to use the list as a guideline for myself but I think it should be a rich resource for the buyer or newcomer and I think it is the right thing to do.
